THE Attorney General Paul Gallagher has advised the Government that parties of up to 200 people are permitted outdoors.

The Attorney General’s intervention came after it emerged Tánaiste Leo Varadkar attended a party of 50 people organised by former minister Katherine Zappone.

In a statement from the Government Press Office, it is noted “further updates will be made to the guidelines to ensure that people have clarity about how organised outdoor events may operate into the future”.

Shortly after that statement this evening, Mr Varadkar also issued a statement saying he was “confident” his attendance at the event did not breach public health guidelines.

Concerns over Passport Service staff as they deal with backlog of 112,000 applications during peak season

There are currently 112,000 applications outstanding with the Passport Service as an army of would-be foreign travellers and holidaymakers sweat on when their precious documents might arrive.

Some 50,000 of these applications require additional documentation – usually a signed form by parents/guardians and a witness in the case of children, in order to conform with the Geneva Convention aimed at preventing the abduction of minors.

A further 62,000 applications are sitting with the Passport Service in processing, concerns about the number of staff involved in getting them out to citizens.

Staff are working long hours, and in some cases, on Saturdays and Sundays to attempt to deal with a growing workload.

Face masks may have to be worn indoors until Christmas, Micheál Martin has said.

The Taoiseach said that he wants us all to keep wearing masks for the winter because Covid and other viruses will still be in the air.

And the Taoiseach issued a warning that we are not out of the woods with Covid yet and that the nation must brace itself for a potentially lethal combination of flu and Covid this winter.

The country’s leader said there would be no ‘Freedom Day’ like there was in the UK when all restrictions were lifted last month.

Mr Martin was speaking with the Irish Mirror in his offices in Government Buildings this week ahead of a short break after being in the job of Taoiseach for just over a year.
