Award-winning novelist Salman Rushdie was on a ventilator and unable to speak on Friday evening after being stabbed at a public event in New York state earlier that day, his agent Andrew Wylie has said.

The 75-year-old Indian-born British-American author has long been the recipient of death threats from Islamists for his work.


“The news is not good,” Wylie said in an email to the media. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”

China Overtakes US in Scientific Research Output

China has overtaken the United States in both scientific research output and “high impact” studies, according to a report published by Japan’s National Institute of Science and Technology Policy.

Between 2018 and 2020 China published a yearly average of 407,181 scientific papers, accounting for 23.4% of the world’s research output, The US published 293,434 papers during the same period.

Chinese research comprised 27.2% of the world’s top 1% most frequently cited papers, eclipsing the US’ 24.9%.

UK Institute Apologizes for Citing Russian Nationality

A UK cancer research facility has apologized for telling a student that her PhD application had been rejected because she is Russian.

The Russian student had been denied a place at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, Scotland. The letter from the institute said: "I am afraid that I have to withdraw my offer. I have just been told that very recently Beatson has established a new policy upon which I am unable to appoint you because you are Russian.”

Beatson’s Director has since reacted by apologizing and saying that the institute “is reviewing the processes internally to prevent this issue from occurring again."
