China Overtakes US in Scientific Research Output

China has overtaken the United States in both scientific research output and โ€œhigh impactโ€ studies, according to a report published by Japanโ€™s National Institute of Science and Technology Policy.

Between 2018 and 2020 China published a yearly average of 407,181 scientific papers, accounting for 23.4% of the worldโ€™s research output, The US published 293,434 papers during the same period.

Chinese research comprised 27.2% of the worldโ€™s top 1% most frequently cited papers, eclipsing the USโ€™ 24.9%.

UK Institute Apologizes for Citing Russian Nationality

A UK cancer research facility has apologized for telling a student that her PhD application had been rejected because she is Russian.

The Russian student had been denied a place at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, Scotland. The letter from the institute said: "I am afraid that I have to withdraw my offer. I have just been told that very recently Beatson has established a new policy upon which I am unable to appoint you because you are Russian.โ€

Beatsonโ€™s Director has since reacted by apologizing and saying that the institute โ€œis reviewing the processes internally to prevent this issue from occurring again."
