Europe in Drought: No Drinking Water in France

100 municipalities across the republic have no access to water safe to drink - and trucks must supply it from other towns. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing left in the pipes,โ€ said Ecological Transition Minister Christophe Bechu.

The drought comes amid wildfires, evacuations, and heat-related deaths as temperatures reach a sizzling 40C. The shortage is also having devastating impacts elsewhere, with farmers reporting production plummeting in soy, sunflower and corn.

The French govt describe the drought as โ€œthe worst ever recordedโ€ as the Loire - the longest river in the country - dries up, allowing tourists to cross it to a nearby castle.

Kiev Threatens Russian Holidaymakers

Russian tourists to Crimea should expect an โ€œunpleasantly hot summer breakโ€ as visitors may be caught up in shellings and airstrikes, according to a chilling video posted by the Ukrainian military on Twitter.

โ€œWe advise our valued Russian guests not to visit Ukrainian Crimeaโ€ the video warns as Bananaramโ€™s โ€˜Cruel Summerโ€™ plays. โ€œYou had a few options this summer: Palm Jumeirah beaches, Antalya Resorts, Cuban Cabanas. You chose Crimea, big mistake. Time to head homeโ€ it continues - as cuts of explosions at Russiaโ€™s Saki Air base and fleeing beachgoers intersperse the message.

Ukraine alleges it caused the explosions - but Russian officials say that an accidental detonation caused the blasts.

FBI Were Looking for โ€˜Nuclear Documentsโ€™ During Trump Mar-a-Lago Raid (report)

Classified documents about nuclear weapons were among sensitive materials that the FBI was looking for when it raided the residence of former US President Donald Trump this week, the Washington Post reported Thursday, citing sources.

According to experts interviewed by the outlet, the FBI raid on Trumpโ€™s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Monday indicates that the current administration is worried about the impact on US national security if these documents get into the wrong hands.

However, the Postโ€™s sources refused to reveal whether the material in question related to nuclear weapons belonging to the US or some other state. They also declined to say whether the FBI had found what it was looking for.

J&J Drops Talc-based Baby Powder Globally as Cancer Lawsuits Mount

Johnson & Johnson said it had made the โ€œcommercial decisionโ€ to transition all its baby powder products to use cornstarch instead of talcum powder.

The healthcare giant has faced tens of thousands of lawsuits from consumers who allege its talc products, including the instantly recognisable brand of Johnsonโ€™s baby powder, caused them to develop cancer.

In 2020, J&J stopped selling the talc-based version in North America after a fall in demand in the wake of what it said was โ€œmisinformationโ€ about the productโ€™s safety - after US regulators found traces of asbestos in the powder.

Russia and Turkey Reach Deal to Ditch Dollar

Moscow and Ankara have reached an agreement to switch some payments for Russian natural gas to rubles. The move comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Russia last week and conducted talks with Vladimir Putin.

Avoiding dealing in US dollars is seen by many as a sign of deepening ties between the two nations. The deal also helps Turkey protect its dwindling hard-currency reserves.

Ankara has refused to join Western sanctions, and instead has pushed for truce talks between Moscow and Kiev.

German Security Chief Warns of Upcoming Mass Unrest - Might Be Co-Opted by โ€˜Extremistsโ€™

Germany could be facing mass unrest this autumn and protests over the energy crisis could be hijacked by extremists, a regional head of the countryโ€™s domestic security agency has said.

Stephan Kramer, who heads the BfV in the state of Thuringia, said Germany must be prepared for the possibility that โ€œlegitimateโ€ protests over energy and economic crises could be โ€œinfiltrated by extremists.โ€

โ€œExtremistsโ€ who could hijack the protests include the so-called โ€œlateral thinkersโ€ who rallied against coronavirus restrictions during the pandemic, and right-wing activists who have already been stirring the mood on social media in recent months, Kramer said.
