Silvio Berlusconi says heโ€™ll run for Senate in the snap election next month

Italyโ€™s political heavyweight Silvio Berlusconi, who was the country's prime minister for four terms, has announced that heโ€™ll run for Senate in the snap election next month.

โ€œI think Iโ€™ll run for the Senate,โ€ Berlusconi, who now leads the center-right party Forza Italia, told Rai Radio 1 station on Wednesday.

The 85-year-old media tycoon said he was making the move after โ€œreceiving pressure from so many, even outside Forza Italia,โ€ and expressed hope that it would โ€œmake everyone happy.โ€

The announcement coincided with the lau...

Some illegal border-crossers were held ten times longer than rules permit, DHS inspectors said

The largest US Border Patrol detention facility held almost 90% of illegal border-crossers for far longer โ€“ some up to ten times longer โ€“ than allowed under current government policy, the Department of Homeland Security said in a report published this week.

The DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) made unannounced visits to seven facilities in the El Paso, Texas district and found the border patrol treating migrants well, but detaining them for more than 72 hours.

Beijing promises resolute countermeasures over Lithuanian delegationโ€™s trip to Taiwan

China has denounced the visit of a Lithuanian official to Taiwan and vowed a resolute response to the move, which it describes as an affront to the โ€˜One Chinaโ€™ principle, according to a statement by a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Thursday.

Last week, Taiwanโ€™s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Agne Vaiciukeviciute had arrived at the self-governing island along with an 11-person delegation for what is expected to be a five-day visit.

The visit comes shortly after U...

This week, Americans got served notice once again that the scales of justice are tipped heavily in favor of one half of the country

A political transformation is currently underway in the United States, one in which the Democratic establishment is on the verge of controlling all levers of power โ€“ from academia, to media and social media to, most ominously, the federal agencies tasked with investigating American citizens and carrying out arrests. The situation has deteriorated to the point where many Americans agreed with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who described his country as a โ€œbanana republic.โ€

Twitter to Launch Anti-Misinformation Drive ahead of US Midterm Elections

Twitter announced Thursday it was rolling out a plan to combat misinformation on the platform ahead of US midterm elections this November.

"Twitter is the place to find real-time, reliable information about the 2022 midterms," a statement read.

Twitterโ€™s plans include enforcing a civic integrity policy, which prohibits content which purportedly contains false information about the election, may โ€œdissuade people from participating in the electionโ€ or โ€œundermine public confidence in an electionโ€.

The companyโ€™s policy regarding political content moderation remains a hot button issue in the US, as some argue Twitter should elevate established newsmakers while others deem its approach to censorship highly inconsistent, sometimes resulting in posts wrongfully denounced as false.

Amnesty Sweden Co-Founder Resigns over Ukraine Report

Per Wastberg, who co-founded the Swedish branch of Amnesty International, resigned from the organization on Wednesday.

The Swedish activist said his departure was due to Amnestyโ€™s report about the conflict in Ukraine, and that the organization has gone beyond its original mandate to advocate for political prisoners.

โ€œFrom its inception, Amnesty worked for the freedom of political prisoners everywhere in the world,โ€ said Wastberg, who co-founded the Swedish branch in 1964. โ€œIt has since gradually, sometimes debatably, expanded its mandateโ€ and become a different kind of organization, Wastberg told the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, where he is an occasional columnist.

Amnesty has faced a torrent of criticism after publishing a report on August 4 that said Ukraine was deliberately placing troops and military vehicles in reside...

FORCED BLACKOUTS: UK Plans for Worst-Case Energy Scenario โ€“ report

Cold weather combined with gas shortages is expected to force UK authorities to enact a โ€œreasonable worst-case scenario,โ€ providing for four days of blackouts during the upcoming winter, Bloomberg reports, citing people familiar with the govtโ€™s planning.

The probable outages may affect not only industry, but also the countryโ€™s households, as a result of an electricity capacity shortfall amounting to about a sixth of peak demand โ€“ even after emergency coal plants have been fired up.

The first stage of the UKโ€™s emergency plan reportedly involves the network operator directing flows of gas on the system, temporarily overriding commercial agreements, while the second stage includes halting supplies to gas-fired power stations, triggering planned power cuts for industrial and domestic users.
