Brits Ditch Cards for Cash amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

UK citizens are turning to cash in order to control their spending - as prices keep rising, a new report by the Post Office says.

Cash withdrawals are up 20% from the previous year. In July alone, post offices handled some ยฃ801m ($870m) in withdrawals, the most since records began five years ago.

"It's absolutely because of the cost-of-living crisis," said the chair of the Cash Action Group. "People will be taking out cash and physically putting it into pots, saying 'this is what I have for bills, this is what I have for food, and this is what's left'." (BBC)

EU Ramped Up Russian Coal Imports Before Ban โ€“ Media

EU member states imported 28% more coal from Russia between March and May this year, compared with the same period in 2021. (Vedomosti)

The EU put an embargo on Russian coal in April and it came into force on Wednesday. Prior to the ban, Russia was the blocโ€™s biggest coal supplier, accounting for about 45% of total imports. The EU imported nearly $4.4 billion worth of coal from Russia annually.

The main importers of coal were Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands, now these countries are particularly vulnerable to the embargo due to the severe energy shortages โ€“ plus high oil and gas prices.

French Energy Firm Fury at Price Caps - Impending Court Battle Looms

EDF is being forced to sell energy at a loss as Macronโ€™s administration combats spiralling energy costs and a cost-of-living crisis- and is now suing the government for โ‚ฌ8.3bn in compensation.

The soon to be nationalised company must sell more energy with huge below-market-rate discounts to its rivals until January - which could cost the company โ‚ฌ15bn by the end of the year.

French leaders hope nationalisation will secure energy supplies amid the imminent European energy crisis threatening power rationing across the continent. This week nuclear plants were allowed to pump hot water into French rivers and lakes to maintain energy supplies.
