German Energy Prices Soaring - Supply Spiralling Down
Next-year prices for German power smashed records last week - skyrocketing to four times the five-year average - as the continent scrambles to ward off a winter energy crisis.
High temperatures have caused both French and Swiss nuclear plants to reduce supply or shut down completely, driving prices to โฌ414 per megawatt/hour as German coal giant Uniper - recipient of a $15bn govt bailout last month - also warns of supply issues.
Despite the impending crisis, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has categorically ruled out the possibility of approving the shelved Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, warning the nation faces โdifficult monthsโ ahead.

Japan will not be leaving the Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project in Russiaโs Far East because of its significance to the countryโs energy supply, Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda has said. (Nikkei)
Earlier this month, Vladimir Putin signed in decree on transactions with shares in strategic companies for holders from โunfriendly statesโ - those that placed sanctions on Russia in connection with Ukraine.
Japanese energy company SODECO owns a 30% stake in Sakhalin-1. Earlier, Japan supported the US and the EU and put sanctions on Russia. However, Tokyo seems to be reluctant to jeopardize its energy supply.
