Watch: Flash Flood Demolishes Road in Japan

North-eastern and central parts of Japan have been devastated by heavy rainfall, with thousands being forced to evacuate and three people reported missing.

Footage from the city of Yamagata shows a road completely destroyed by the precipitation.

Hindu believers get coconuts smashed on their heads as part of thanksgiving festival

Hundreds of Hindus attended the ceremony at the Sri Mahalakshmi Temple on Thursday, as part of the Aadi Perukku festival, described as the commemoration of the life-giving and sustaining nature of water.

According to local reports, the breaking of coconuts on devotees’ heads represents breaking free from one’s past and surrendering to God.

Due to the nature of the act, some of the devotees end up with injuries. In occasional cases, some of those that get hurt opt not to receive treatment out of respect for the deities and prefer to apply turmeric instead.

Deadly Thai Nightclub Inferno Kills At Least 17

A devastating fire has reportedly killed at least 17 and injured dozens more after sweeping through a packed Thai nightclub, thought to have been caused by flammable foam wall insulation.

Firefighters wrestled with the inferno for more than 3 hours. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha responded with condolences to the families of the deceased and ordered a probe on Friday.

“I don’t know what to say. The death came all of a sudden,” said the mother of one of the victims.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued guidelines for ‘safer sex’ amid the spread of the monkeypox virus, urging romantic partners to take steps to reduce exposure to the rare illness. 

Published on Friday and entitled ‘Safer Sex, Social Gatherings, and Monkeypox’, the CDC document advises partners to watch out for “any new or unexplained rash or lesion” on various body parts, one distinct symptom of the monkeypox virus.

Assange Book Confiscated from Family Members at Australian Parliament

Julian Assange’s brother Gabriel Shipton said that security staff at Parliament House in Canberra seized copies of a book about the WikiLeaks Founder as they entered the building to meet MPs on Thursday, claiming they were “protest material”.

“I was saying ‘this is ridiculous. They’re books’,” Shipton said, according to the Guardian. “I offered to call Andrew Wilkie, who was the MP who co-chaired the Parliamentary Friends of the Bring Julian Assange Home Group. He said ‘yes, go ahead, call him, but you can’t take the books in’.”

The copies were of a book on Assange’s case by Nils Melzer, the former United Nations special rapporteur on torture, and were intended to be handed out to the legislators and members of press.

Brain-Swelling Disease Kills Israeli, Health Ministry Investigating Spread

A 36-year-old Israeli has died of encephalitis, a rare disease which causes inflammation of the brain, by coming into contact with a rare amoeba, despite having no pre-existing conditions.

There are only around 400 cases of the disease per year but it is often fatal. Contact with the cell usually occurs in standing water such as puddles.

The Israeli Health Ministry is now searching for further exposure cases.

36 DEAD In DRC Deadly Anti-UN Protests

Four UN peacekeepers are dead and UN buildings are ablaze in a number of cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo as civilians call for immediate withdrawal of troops who they say have failed to protect them from militia violence.

A recent poll found 44% of the population want the UN’s forces Monesco gone immediately as they allegedly use live ammunition on protestors. Meanwhile, DRC Senate leader Modeste Bahati demanded Monusco “pack its bags”.

The UN has had a presence in the Congo since 1999, while some hope that the visit of the US Secretary of State next month will stabilize the situation.
