Oil-Rich UAE Suffers Unprecedented Fuel Prices

Only years after fuel was cheaper than bottled water, the UAE is suffering from rocketing fuel prices that hit $4.66 per gallon - a rise of 70% since the conflict in Ukraine began.

Lavish welfare packages were slashed in 2015, but the UAE was recently pressured into allotting $7.6 billion to prop up “low-income” families - categorized as those that earn below $6,800 per month.

“People were suffering,” said Emirati social media influencer Hassan al-Amiri. “People think Emiratis are filthy rich but I don't have an oil rig. Our needs are increasing.”

Google Cuts Hiring Goals – Report

The tech giant has pulled back hiring plans for some of its divisions, Business Insider reports, citing internal sources.

According to BI, the company did not officially confirm the shift, though management did say Google will “make sure the great talent we do hire is aligned with our long-term priorities.”

Leadership also directed some managers to give back a percentage of their headcount grants for the third quarter of 2022.

Avoiding US Recession ‘Increasingly Challenging’ - IMF

An IMF Executive Board document published Tuesday concludes that it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid a US recession as Washington was advised to roll back tariffs introduced in the last 5 years.

The Executive Board recommends US policy "must be to expeditiously slow price growth without precipitating a recession”, and that misjudging policy will result in £negative spillovers for the global economy”.

Europe Underground Gas Storage Filling Rate HALVES With Nord Stream Shutdown

Official data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows that the net filling rate of Europe’s underground gas storage facilities halved their normal rates on Monday amidst Nord Stream’s maintenance shutdown.

On Monday overall input reached just 348 million cubic meters - below over 500 million cubic meters in previous days - while withdrawals leapt from 17 to 76 million cubic meters.

Nord Stream deliveries will be suspended until July 21 while annual scheduled maintenance work is carried out; in the meantime Gazprom said 41.3 million cubic meters of Russian gas would be supplied through Ukraine.

World Economic Forum Says Gender Parity 132 Years Away

Women are bearing the brunt of the current recession and cost-of-living crisis, with the Covid-19 pandemic and several economic shocks standing in the way of closing the gender gap, the World Economic Forum reported on Wednesday.

In its Global Gender Gap Report 2022, the WEF estimated that – at the current rate of progress – it will take 132 years for men and women to reach full parity, with the global gender gap being closed by 68.1%. The Geneva-based NGO noted that it’s a slight improvement from 136 years – a figure projected in 2021 – but said there was still a lot of work to do.

According to the document, the pandemic has made the gender disparity much worse, because it hit many women-dominated sectors, including travel, retail, and tourism industries.
