Iran and Argentina Apply to Join BRICS

The Islamic Republic of Iran has officially submitted its application to join the group of five leading economies made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the foreign ministry in Tehran announced Monday.

Argentina has also applied; President Alberto Fernandez on Friday urged the creation of cooperation mechanisms that could represent the alternative to ostensibly private institutions run by – and in the interest of – the West.

Russian FM Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that current BRICS members will have to reach a consensus regarding their admissions - but both countries are worthy candidates.

China Deletes “Misleading” 5 YEARS’ Zero-Covid Policy Comment (report)

Chinese censors scrambled to remove an apparently misleading comment from a Communist Party official reported by state media that suggested Beijing will continue its controversial “Zero Covid” policy for another 5 years.

After a predictably furious backlash on social media, Beijing Daily removed the reference to 5 years and described it as an “editing error”.

CNN reviewed the unredacted speech and reported the quote was indeed potentially misleading, but that the official had discussed the possibility of the policies lasting 5 years.

Sri Lanka LOCKDOWN - Private Fuel Banned

Sri Lanka’s crisis lurched from bad to worse Monday as the government instructed citizens to stay at home, restricted fuel supplies to essential services until July 10 and suggested inter-regional public transport will be halted.

Talks continue with the IMF over a $3bn bailout plan, while bilateral creditors China and India have been asked to extend emergency funds as envoys are sent to Russia and Qatar cap in hand to source desperately needed fuel supplies.

The Central Bank’s governor has agreed to pay outstanding dues to companies for fuel supplies “with a plan”.
