Japan Power Crunch Risk as Tokyo Rain Season Ends Early for First Time in Decades

Amidst soaring temperatures and the earliest end to Tokyo’s rainy season in over 70 years, Japanese authorities have warned a power crisis may be imminent and are begging citizens to cut back on energy usage.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party faces challenging elections for the parliament’s upper house in less than a fortnight after fierce criticism of its handling of consumer prices.

In Tokyo and eight nearby prefectures, excess generating capacity was predicted to drop to 3.7% on Monday afternoon local time - 3% is considered the minimum for stable power supply.

An Amtrak train from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed in Missouri after hitting a truck

A long-haul passenger train carrying 243 passengers and 12 crew derailed in the US state of Missouri, after reportedly striking a truck at a railroad crossing. Preliminary reports mentioned several people with injuries of varying severity, at least three of whom had to be taken to a hospital about 80 miles away. There were no confirmations of fatalities.
