G7 Announces $600bn Rival To Chinaโ€™s Belt and Road Investment

G7 leaders relaunched the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment project on Sunday that commits $600bn from public and private funds to developing economies over the next 5 years.

The aim is apparently to rival Beijingโ€™s multi-trillion dollar Belt and Road initiative, but US President Joe Biden insists it โ€œisnโ€™t aid or charityโ€ and will deliver โ€œreturns for everyoneโ€.

While Biden trumpets solar development in Angola and vaccine development in Senegal amongst examples of Western generosity, itโ€™s worth remembering the G7 contributes just 0.32% of their GDP in development assistance - less than half what they promised.

DPRK Accuses US Of โ€œAsian NATOโ€ - Pledges Stronger Defense

North Korea says it has been forced to develop stronger defense systems after accusing Washington of developing a NATO-esque alliance in Asia through military drills with South Korea and Japan.

"This proves the hypocrisy of the U.S. rhetoric of 'diplomatic engagement' and 'dialogue without preconditions', while at the same time revealing again that there is no change in the U.S. ambition to overthrow our system by force," the North Korean foreign ministry said.

The statement released on the ministryโ€™s website comes a day before South Korean leader Yoon Seok-youl jets off to Spain for a NATO summit - his countryโ€™s first President to do so.

Cyber Attack SHUTS Iranian Steel Plant

Iranโ€™s state-owned giant Khuzestan Steel was hit by one of the industryโ€™s largest cyberattacks of recent times which forced it to shut down production until further notice.

CEO Amin Ebrahimi played down the attack claiming it had been โ€œunsuccessfulโ€ and hoped the website and operations would back up and running by the end of Monday.

According to local news agency Jamaran, the attack failed because the factory was not operational at the time due to a power outage, but follows attacks on gas stations, trains, surveillance networks and state-run websites in the last year.

Western MSM Celebrates โ€œRussian Defaultโ€ - But Admits Itโ€™s โ€œSymbolicโ€

After two Russian Eurobond coupon grace periods expired Sunday, Western media wasted no time in celebrating what it called Moscowโ€™s state of default - but admitted it was a hollow statement nonetheless.

Bloomberg, the BBC and the Wall Street Journal jumped on the bandwagon trumpeting โ€œa grim marker in the countryโ€™s rapid transformation into a financial and political outcastโ€ despite admitting โ€œRussia has the money and intent to payโ€.

The Kremlin has slammed the claims of default as โ€œillegalโ€ as spox Dmitry Peskov pointed out a payment in foreign currency was made in May so โ€œthe fact funds were not delivered to recipients is not our problemโ€.

Prince Charles Faces Scrutiny Over โ€˜Bags of Multi-Million Qatari Cashโ€™

Prince Charles could face an investigation by the UKโ€™s Charity Commission regarding multi-million-pound donations made by the Qatari royal family to the Prince of Walesโ€™s Charitable Fund, his grant-making entity, following a series of UK press revelations on Sunday.

The prince is believed to have received three separate payments of cash totaling over ยฃ2.5 million ($3.07 million) between the years 2011 and 2015, personally accepting the donations in cash from Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al Thani, who served as PM of Qatar from 2007 to 2013.

Amid calls for a full and transparent probe, the Charity Commission acknowledged it was โ€œconsidering whether there's a role for the commission to investigate these matters,โ€ a spokesman said.

Von Der Leyen Speaks Against โ€˜Paralyzingโ€™ G20 - Despite Boycott Calls over Russia

It is better to have a frank face-to-face conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin than boycott the Group of Twenty summit this year, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has said.

โ€œIt is also important to tell him to his face what we think of him and what we think of this kind of action,โ€ von der Leyen told the German broadcaster ZDF on Sunday.

However, she said there can be no โ€œbusiness as usualโ€ with Russia after it launched a military campaign in Ukraine in late February.

US Robodog Sent to Help Ukraine

A modified version of Boston Dynamicsโ€™ robot dog Spot will be sent to Ukraine to help an American firm that has won multiple contracts in Ukraine to clear battlefields near Kiev after approval by the US army.

HALO Trust will use Spot with a robotic arm instead of a โ€œheadโ€ to handle unexploded munitions and dispose of them but will still need to be controlled manually.

Ukrainian officials estimate around 300,000 square kilometers of land need to be de-mined, which could take up to a decade to clear.

Japan Power Crunch Risk as Tokyo Rain Season Ends Early for First Time in Decades

Amidst soaring temperatures and the earliest end to Tokyoโ€™s rainy season in over 70 years, Japanese authorities have warned a power crisis may be imminent and are begging citizens to cut back on energy usage.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party faces challenging elections for the parliamentโ€™s upper house in less than a fortnight after fierce criticism of its handling of consumer prices.

In Tokyo and eight nearby prefectures, excess generating capacity was predicted to drop to 3.7% on Monday afternoon local time - 3% is considered the minimum for stable power supply.
