Boris Johnson Reveals Downside of Settling Ukraine Conflict

The West needs to keep arming Ukraine instead of seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Kiev and Moscow, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson told French President Emmanuel Macron.

Any attempt to resolve the conflict peacefully will lead to global instability, he said at a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit on Sunday.

According to the statement, Johnson and Macron have agreed to continue supporting Kiev militarily to โ€œstrengthen their hand in both the war and any future negotiations.โ€

EU Steps Back into the Coal Age - Media

A number of EU countries have launched emergency plans aimed to lower and ration the use of natural gas and resurrect coal-fired power production, Business Insider reported on Tuesday.

This week, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands announced that coal-generated power could help them cope with an energy crisis in the coming winter. German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck said the country made a โ€œbitterโ€ decision to restart coal power plants.

โ€œBut if we donโ€™t do it, then we run the risk that the storage facilities will not be full enough at the end of the year towards the winter season. And then we are blackmailable on a political level,โ€ he stated.

Number of Foreign Businesses Leaving Russia Revealed

A small percentage of German and Japanese businesses reportedly wish to completely halt all operations in Russia in response to Moscowโ€™s military operation in neighboring Ukraine, launched in late February.

According to the latest figures released by the Russian-German Chamber of Commerce on Sunday, only 4% of the 1,050 member companies surveyed that once operated in the sanctions-hit country really wanted to leave.

โ€œThe rest is planning either to continue their activities in the market without any changes, or partially abandoning new projects or changing their structure,โ€ the business lobby said.

Estonian businesses that depend on goods and raw materials imported from Russia and Belarus would be expected to face extra costs of โ‚ฌ860 million, according to the Foresight Center.

Replacing goods supplied from Russia and Belarus is complicated by the lack of surplus in Estoniaโ€™s domestic market, the think tank said in its latest report devoted the issue.

Unvaxxed Djokovic Gives Up Hope of Playing US Open

Unvaccinated tennis world number two Novak Djokovic appears resigned to missing another tennis grand slam in 2022 given his vaccine stance and American covid protocol that will prevent him from playing the US Open later this year.

Djokovic was memorably deported from Australia at the turn of the year and prevented from defending his crown at the Australian Open eventually won by Rafael Nadal, who surpassed him in all-time grand slam wins on 21.

Yet he was allowed to enter the French Open also won by Nadal last month after Covid protocols were lifted there.
