European Commission Urges People to Lower Heating by Two Degrees – to ‘Compensate’ for Russian Gas

Ursula von der Leyen said the move could conserve energy and prioritize needs for the EU to compensate for Russian gas flow from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which Gazprom reduced citing technical issues.

“If we decrease the heating in Europe by two degrees, or the cooling, less air conditioning, this will compensate for the whole delivery from Nord Stream 1. It’s a lot of work still. And the circumstances are serious,” the commission chief said. (The Irish Times)

Horrific Afghan Earthquake KILLS At Least 280, Wounds Over 600

A devastating earthquake has struck Afghanistan's Paktika province, killing at least 280 people and injuring over 600 more amidst rubble of destroyed buildings, according to local authorities.

The epicenter struck 44km from the southeastern city of Khost, with tremors from the 6.1 quake felt across 500km including the capital Kabul, as well as in India and Pakistan.

The quake struck in the early hours of Wednesday morning as aid helicopters rushed to the scene, and was likely to claim more lives officials have said.
