UK Economic Apocalypse Warning: City Bosses Predict Recession

Britainโ€™s brutal struggle against the cost of living crisis could get much worse according to a panel of City bosses as OECD forecasts the UKโ€™s 2023 growth at 0, the lowest in the G20.

The signals - economy shrinking 0.1% in March, 40yr high inflation of 9%, Bank of England interest rate hike to 1.25% - indicate a โ€œrealโ€ risk of a โ€œsustained and deep recessionโ€.

Policy makers must quickly decide between "short, sharp shock or a slow but ultimately more painful reduction in GDP" said former Lloyds Banking Group chair Sir Win Bischoff.

Moscow Calls European Gas Cuts Man-Made Crisis Created by EU

Western sanctions on Moscow are preventing deliveries of Russian gas to Germany via the Nord Stream pipeline, the Kremlin said Monday.

Russia remains โ€œthe most reliable supplier," Kremlin spox Dmitry Peskov added - but EU sanctions made delivery technically impossible.

Gazprom was forced to cut off its gas supply to Germany via Nord Stream after Siemens failed to return a piece of equipment โ€œin due timeโ€ after it was sent to Canada for repairs.

Russia Threatens Lithuania with โ€˜Seriousโ€™ Consequences

Moscowโ€™s retaliation to Lithuaniaโ€™s transport โ€œblockadeโ€ of Russiaโ€™s Kaliningrad Region will seriously affect Lithuanian citizens, Nikolay Patrushev, the head of Russiaโ€™s Security Council, has said.

โ€œOf course, Russia will respond to hostile actions. Appropriate measures are in the works, and will be adopted in the near future,โ€ Patrushev told reporters. He added that the consequences of Moscowโ€™s response will โ€œhave a serious negative impact on the people of Lithuania.โ€

The Kaliningrad Region is a small Russian exclave sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. On Saturday, Lithuaniaโ€™s national railway operator banned the flow of sanctioned goods between the region and the rest of Russia, citing instructions from the European Commission.

EU Leaders Target Russian Gold in Sustained Sanctions - report

This weekโ€™s EU leadersโ€™ summit is expected to focus attention on Russian gold in a possible future package of sanctions, according to a draft document. (Reuters)

There is reportedly a split among EU members on how to proceed with sanctions; Nordic and Eastern European nations have pushed for more new sanctions, whereas Germany and the Netherlands want to focus on strengthening existing ones.

Officials say there is no formal proposal for a full package of new restrictions against Moscow, but discussions will weigh up which areas could be added.
