Desperate measures are being taken to offset the horrific fuel crisis plaguing Sri Lanka, with authorities moving to order schools to shut and public sector workers to stay at home on Friday.

The country has almost run out of gasoline completely, while power cuts up to 4 hours a day have been announced.

With a total foreign debt of $51 billion - of which almost half must be repaid by 2026 - and an estimated $75BN needed for vital supplies, Sri Lanka is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

Almost 2,000 Fighters Surrender at Azovstal โ€“ Russian MoD

Defense chief Sergei Shoigu has given a rundown of the current state of Moscowโ€™s โ€˜special operation,โ€™ saying in particular that over 1,900 Ukrainian fighters have recently surrendered at the besieged Azovstal factory.

It was announced that Russian forces will significantly increase their reliance on combat drones, in an effort to lessen personnel losses.

Shoigu also detailed Moscowโ€™s response to Helsinki and Stockholmโ€™s efforts to join NATO, as well as the blocโ€™s upcoming exercise in Eastern Europe, announcing that Russia will be creating 12 new military units to be stationed on its Western border.

FIVE EYES vs China: Canada to Ban Phone Makers from 5G Networks

Canada says it will ban two Chinese telecom giants, Huawei and ZTE, from working on its 5G phone networks.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne said the decision was made to "protect the safety and security of Canadians."

The UK, US, Australia and New Zealand have already put similar restrictions in place. Ottawaโ€™s decision to join the ban was expected as part of the intelligence-sharing group Five Eyes.

US Splashes $119MN On Monkeypox Vaccines

American authorities have rushed to secure a series of contracts for vaccines against monkeypox that could reach 13 million doses and up to $299 million if all options are exercised.

Danish pharma company Bavarian Nordic will provide the first batch of jabs - which were originally designed to tackle smallpox but have since been approved for monkeypox. Bavarian Nordic also announced a similar agreement with an undisclosed European country, with the vaccines not due to arrive till 2023.

Washington also bought $7.5-million worth of antiviral monkeypox treatment tecovirimat.
