Defense Minister Peter Dutton has branded the deployment of a Chinese warship as a show of aggression. The vessel - reportedly with spying capabilities - moved close to military locations.
The Dongdiao Class Auxiliary Intelligence ship has apparently been roaming Australia's coastline for the past week, amidst heightened tensions between Canberra and Beijing over Chinaโs pact with the Solomon Islands.
Dutton rejected suggestions the timing of his announcement was connected to the countryโs upcoming general election in 8 days time.

Austria Threatens Seizure of Russian Gas Depot
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has called on Gazprom to refill its storage near Salzburg, in an interview with Kleine Zeitung.
Haidach is the second largest gas depot in Central Europe and belongs to Gazprom - it is reportedly sitting empty though.
"If this is not filled, we will consider measures so that it has to be filled. There are other ways to access the storage. That means use it or lose it." the chancellor warned.
The countryโs energy minister recently confirmed that Austria receives Russian gas without any interruptions.

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has insisted the governmentโs antiquated IT systems wouldnโt allow him to raise welfare benefits to match rising inflation costs, as they only allow updating once a year.
Around 2.6MN people are in line for benefits on a system unchanged since the 1980s, which takes at least 4 months to update - while the one that covers some 12MN pensioners is even slower.
Aprilโs annual review only raised benefits 3.1%, despite inflation rocketing to 7%.

Several hotels taking bookings for this winterโs football World Cup refused to accommodate gay couples, despite assurances from world governing body FIFA that they would.
A Scandinavian investigation revealed that three FIFA-approved hotels in Qatar - where male homosexuality is punishable by 3 yearsโ prison and even death - flat-out refused to process bookings. 20 more demanded that guests didnโt publicly display their homosexuality.
LGBTQ+ rights groups have accused FIFA and local organizers of failing to prove it's safe to travel to the country.

Washingtonโs plans to unleash some 140BN metric tons of gas by fracking could spell global climate doom - according to analysis seen by the Guardian.
Crude production is expected to explode to a record 12.6MN barrels of crude per day next year, with drilling permits near schools and residential areas routinely rushed through - despite risks from fracking of leukemia, asthma and heart defects.
โWe canโt drill our way out of this problemโฆ we are the worldโs top oil producer and that still has not insulated us from this crisis,โ said one university researcher.
