Austria Threatens Seizure of Russian Gas Depot

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has called on Gazprom to refill its storage near Salzburg, in an interview with Kleine Zeitung.

Haidach is the second largest gas depot in Central Europe and belongs to Gazprom - it is reportedly sitting empty though.

"If this is not filled, we will consider measures so that it has to be filled. There are other ways to access the storage. That means use it or lose it." the chancellor warned.

The country’s energy minister recently confirmed that Austria receives Russian gas without any interruptions.

UK Govt Blames Old IT Systems For Preventing Benefits Increase

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has insisted the government’s antiquated IT systems wouldn’t allow him to raise welfare benefits to match rising inflation costs, as they only allow updating once a year.

Around 2.6MN people are in line for benefits on a system unchanged since the 1980s, which takes at least 4 months to update - while the one that covers some 12MN pensioners is even slower.

April’s annual review only raised benefits 3.1%, despite inflation rocketing to 7%.
