Ruble Worldโs Top Performing Currency Against US Dollar - Up 11%
Despite the raft of sanctions designed to cripple the Russian economy, the ruble has been the best-performing global currency against the US dollar in 2022, gaining 11% according to Bloomberg data.
Insisting oil payments be made in rubles has boosted the Russian currencyโs value to outperform the Brazilian real (9% gain on USD), as more EU buyers comply with Moscowโs payment demands.
It isnโt just the dollar that the ruble has gained ground on - the Moscow Exchange traded the euro at 68 to the ruble for the first time since January 2020.

A joint operation between Israelโs security forces has thwarted an alleged Hamas attempt to smuggle arms from the Gaza Strip to Egyptโs Sinai.
Three Palestinians have been arrested from the operation a few weeks back, but details were barred from being published until this Wednesday.
The IDF did not disclose what was being smuggled but said one detainee was arrested for a similar offense before.

Airliner Bursts into Flames After Skidding Off Runway in China
Dozens of passengers were injured while fleeing the Tibet Airlines jet in south-west China.
Officials say one of the engines scraped the runway during takeoff from Chongqing Airport on Thursday morning.
All 122 people on board โ including 113 passengers and nine flight crew โ were safely evacuated, Tibet Airlines said, though around 40 were taken to the hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

Ukraine EU Membership is Now Unacceptable for Peace Deal - Russia
Russia has changed stance on Ukraineโs prospects of EU membership, and now it cannot be a part of any peace deal, according to Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy.
โThe situation has changed after Mr. Borrellโs statement that โthis war should be won on the battlegroundโ and after the fact that the European Union is the leader in deliveries of arms [to Ukraine].โ the diplomat stated.
Thereโs little place left for diplomacy in the conflict, Polyanskiy admitted, partly due to Western efforts to prolong the hostilities.

One death occurred every five minutes, in a grim record set for a third consecutive year. More than 107,600 Americans died, according to CDC data, driven by fentanyl and other opioid abuse.
It's the highest number since records began, as overdoses surged 30% between 2019 and 2020. The largest increase was seen in Alaska, where drug-related deaths soared 75.3% over the previous year.
Synthetic opioid fentanyl remained the primary culprit, present in nearly two-thirds (71,238) of the casualties. Methamphetamine was a distant second, appearing in 32,856 cases, though it showed a steeper increase compared to fentanyl; 24,538 of those who died had taken cocaine, while just 13,503 had taken prescription pain medications.

A new shock (not really a shock) poll has shown that more Americans are OK with Ukraine losing the current conflict (43%) than those who are not (41%) - with more wanting Joe Biden removed from power (53%) than Vladimir Putin (44%).
53% of respondents in the Democracy Institute/Express poll believed the sanctions intended to hit Russia are actually harming the US more, and 63% now think Biden wonโt be reelected in 2024.
