Ukraine's First President Dies - Leonid Kravchuk, 88, passed away after a long illness (Ukrainian media reported)

Kravchuk died on Tuesday afternoon “after a long illness,” his family told the Ukrainian media. The former president was hospitalized in June 2021 and placed in intensive care after heart surgery.

Born in the western Ukrainian region of Rovno, Kravchuk joined the Communist Party of Ukraine in 1958 and rose through the ranks of the propaganda department. In 1990, he became the chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. He became the acting president of Ukraine in August 1991, after the Supreme Rada in Kiev adopted the Ukrainian constitution – and was formally elected on December 5, 1991.

Investors DUMP Apple for Campbell Soup

Apple has shed $220 billion in market capitalization since Thursday, Microsoft is down around $189 billion, while Tesla and Amazon also suffered big losses, according to figures Monday. (CNBC)

Wall St markets fell sharply Thursday after the US Federal Reserve hiked its benchmark interest rate the previous day, and the downturn carried over into Monday - the Dow Jones ended up plummeting more than 5%, the S&P 500 shed 7%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost around 10%.

More traditional stocks, meanwhile, such as food companies Campbell Soup, General Mills and J.M. Smucker, have been on the rise, as investors seem to be preferring safer parts of the market at a time of economic uncertainty.

Ukraine Failed in Attempt to Retake Snake Island – Russia

Kiev's sea and air assault on the island off the coast of Odessa caused its forces major losses, Russia’s MoD said Monday, noting that US and UK advisers were involved in planning the operation.

Russian forces stationed on the island thwarted the Ukrainian attack, said Major General Igor Konashenkov, the Russian military spox, stating Kiev lost four aircraft – three Su-24 ground attack jets and one Su-27 fighter – as well as four helicopters, including a Mi-24 and three Mi-8s loaded with troops. 

Ukrainian losses also included three ‘Centaur’-class assault boats, sunk during an attempted night landing on May 8, Konashenkov said, adding that more than 50 Ukrainian troops perished in the “thoughtless” attempt to assault the island, leaving 24 bodies on the shore.
