The latest measures apply to Channel One, Russia-1 and NTV, all of which broadcast in Russian to a domestic audience. The sanctions forbid American companies from providing accounting and consulting services to these networks, and deprive them of advertising revenue from US firms.

US running low on weapons as it arms Ukraine โ€“ Congressman
RT World News (RSS)

The military industrial complex wants more money to solve the problem

Rep. Mike Gallagher, a Republican from Wisconsin, has claimed that the USโ€™ rush to arm Ukraine has โ€œburned throughโ€ years worth of weapons stockpiles, hampering Washingtonโ€™s ability to simultaneously arm Taiwan against potential conflict with China. Meanwhile, the USโ€™ vast military industry is lobbying the White House for more contracts.

โ€œWe are running low in terms of our stockpiles,โ€ Gallagher, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee, told Fox News on Friday....

European banks reveal cost of Russia exit

The need to write down assets as well as setting aside cash to shield against the expected economic ramifications of anti-Russia sanctions has resulted in billions of euro in losses for European banks.

The lenders have so far taken a hit of about $9.6 billion, led by Societe Generale and UniCredit. ING and Intesa Sanpaolo reported that Russian exposure had slashed their combined first-quarter net income by nearly $2 billion.

Japan warns of Ukraine-like conflict

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has warned that a Ukraine-style armed conflict could break out in East Asia. He said that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is critical for Tokyo and the international community.

โ€œWe must collaborate with our allies and like-minded countries, and never tolerate a unilateral attempt to change the status quo by the use of force in the Indo Pacific, especially in East Asia,โ€ Kishida said during a meeting with his British counterpart Boris Johnson in London on Thursday.

โ€œUkraine may be East Asia tomorrow,โ€ the Japanese PM added.

France eyes agricultural waste to replace Russian gas

In an effort to reduce its reliance on natural gas from sanctions-hit Russia, France wants to ramp up biomethane production from agricultural waste. Itโ€™s hoped the biogas can replace Russian fuel in less than 10 years.

French farmers have expressed support for Europeโ€™s bid to wean itself off Russian gas, and are planning to launch new biofuel production facilities, the Associated Press reports, adding that small biofuel stations are already supplying hundreds or thousands of households.

However, the biogas solution is unlikely to provide a quick replacement for supplies from Russia, AP noted.

CIA director explains why China is โ€˜carefullyโ€™ studying Ukraine

Chinese President Xi Jinping is โ€œunsettledโ€ by the Westโ€™s reaction to Russiaโ€™s military operation in Ukraine, and is looking โ€œcarefully at what lessons [he] should drawโ€ and apply to a potential invasion of Taiwan, CIA Director William Burns told a conference on Saturday.

Speaking at a Financial Times conference in Washington DC on Saturday, Burns told his audience that his agency figures that Russiaโ€™s advance through Eastern Ukraine and the scale of the Westโ€™s response may be influencing Beijingโ€™s plans for Taiwan.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously claimed that Putin could use such weapons.

โ€œWe don't see, as an intelligence community, practical evidence at this point of Russian planning for the deployment or even potential use of tactical nuclear weapons,โ€ Burns said at the conference in Washington DC, repeating a similar assessment he made at the beginning of April.
