Beijing Orders Govt Agencies & State Orgs To Dump Foreign PCs

China has ordered all employees of government bodies and state organizations to ditch foreign-branded PCs for domestic equivalents. (Bloomberg)

Just at central govt level alone this is likely to cull 50mn foreign PCs, with sales of HP and Dell - China's two biggest non-domestic computer brands - likely to take a serious hit.

Stocks in Chinese tech companies unsurprisingly leapt up; Lenovo and Kingsoft erased losses to post 5% and 3.3% gains respectively on Hong Kong markets, while mainland exchanges saw rises of between 4-10% for other Chinese computer-related brands.

โ€˜Donโ€™t patronize usโ€™ over Ukraine - India warns Netherlands

India's UN Permanent Rep, TS Tirumurti, has accused the Netherlands of โ€œpatronizingโ€ his country after the Dutch ambassador to the UK publicly scolded New Delhi for abstaining on UN General Assembly resolutions on Ukraine.

"Kindly don't patronise us, Ambassador. We know what to do," Tirumurti tweeted Dutch envoy Karel van Oosterom Thursday, in response to the ambassadorโ€™s now-deleted warning that India should โ€œrespect the UN Charter,โ€ and โ€œnot abstainโ€ on votes.

Despite growing pressure to join the West in isolating Russia over the Ukraine conflict, New Delhi has been reluctant to cut ties with Moscow and abstained on multiple votes against Russia.

Tirumurti reiterated India's position that "pursuing the path of dialogue and diplomacy" is the "only way out" of...

Russia โ€œFull Mobilizationโ€ Reports FALSE - Duma Speaker Volodin

Moscow has flatly denied CNN reports, citing unnamed Western officials, that Russia is planning a full mobilization of forces by Mondayโ€™s Victory Day - when the defeat of Nazi Germany is celebrated.

Deputy head of the Russian parliamentโ€™s Defense Committee Yuri Shvydkin claimed โ€œthe rumors based on foreign sources are being spread in an attempt to sow confusion and panic among the populationโ€.

Kremlin spox Dmitry Peskov dismissed claims in the CNN report that President Putin was planning to exploit the โ€œsymbolic significance and propaganda valueโ€ of May 9 as โ€œlies and nonsenseโ€.

Europe canโ€™t replace Russian gas โ€“ Shell CEO

European countries will not be able to replace Russian natural gas without an energy transition, according to Shell CEO Ben van Beurden.

Increasing gas supplies from Africa and Scandinavia as well as boosting purchases of LNG is not enough, the Shell chief said Thursday - Russia supplies about 40% of the natural gas consumed in the region.

"There is no way to simply buy more pipeline gas and LNG to completely replace all the Russian gas that we currently consume. This is not feasible,โ€ van Beurden said.

Cyberscammers / 2022

#India

Have you ever had a phone scam call? One where a guy claims to be from your bank? They feed you a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo, warning all of your money would be lost unless you immediately give up your credit card details.

Entire buildings in Kolkata, India, are occupied by call centres full of scammers. They work from the comfort of their office while their prey lives in another country, so the crime is hard to trace. In 2021, the damage inflicted by phone fraud in the United States was estimated at almost $30 bln. People may receive a voice message or an e-mail saying, โ€œSomeone is buying stuff using your Amazon account.โ€ Sometimes scammers go as far as introducing themselves as officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the Prosecutorโ€™s Office, asking for help in solving a case by making a transfer to a third partyโ€™s account.

BoJoโ€™s Fukushima Popcorn: UK Scraps Radioactive Food Regs

After meeting Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida at Downing Street, UK PM Boris Johnson has scrapped regulations banning Japanese food imports with over 100 becquerels of radioactivity.

Kishida had brought popcorn produced near the Fukushima nuclear power plant that was devastated by tsunami-induced power failures in 2011 to mark the UK dropping the last restrictions on fish and farm produce.

The leaders also discussed a new defense agreement for joint exercises, and discussed North Koreaโ€™s recent ballistic missile tests.
