Bank of England RECESSION Warning as Interest Rates Hit 13-year High

After the Bank of England raised the base rate of interest to 1%, the fourth consecutive raise to levels not seen since 2009, fears grew of a recession in the UK.

The country looks set to narrowly avoid a technical recession (two successive quarters of falling GDP), but the BoE forecasts GDP to drop 0.25% next year as unemployment rockets.

The attempt to control inflation will see Consumer Price Index inflation rise from 7% to 10% by October according to BoE forecasts.

Bruising Local Election Night for Conservatives – Tories Lose Three Major London Strongholds

UK PM Boris Johnson's Conservative Party suffered local election losses in their few London heartlands, that will pile more pressure on PM Boris Johnson amid ethics scandals and a worsening economic picture.

The main opposition Labour Party - which has been out of power nationally since 2010 - won control of Wandsworth, Barnet and Westminster, three London boroughs long held by the Tories.

Politics professor John Curtice forecasts 250 Conservative seats will be lost nationally. One senior party member claimed its leadership needed to "take a long hard look at itself in the mirror" as local council leaders called for Johnson to resign.

Full results are due later Friday.
