Private satellite firms contracted to help Ukraine โ€“ media

Companies are supplying intelligence to NATO, Kiev, and the media, the Wall Street Journal reported

A host of private companies have deployed spy satellites over Ukraine to track the movement of Russian forces from space, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. Some sell this data to Western governments and media outlets, while others send it directly to the government in Kiev. With the line between observation and participation blurred, some of these firms are keeping their work quiet.

When outlets such as the Wall Street Journal publish aerial photos from Ukraine, theyโ€™re not relying on spy...

Taiwan Let Down: Island considering options after US delays Howitzer delivery

The island's Def. Ministry is weighing up alternatives after Washington informed Taipei a "crowded production line" meant there was a delay on delivering the artillery system.

The US confirmed the sale of 40 medium self-propelled Howitzers to Taiwan last year (due in 2023), for a sum of $750MN - now it's reportedly looking like 2026 at the earliest.

Reuters says Taiwan is considering other Lockheed Martin launchers, but with America ramping up support and supply for Ukraine it's unclear what's available.

The US has consistently encouraged Taiwan to boost its defenses to thwart any aggressive moves from China, but the Biden Admin seems to have other priorities.

Mourners forced to rent coffins โ€“ media

Surging inflation in the UK appears to be behind the growth of casket-renting services

Cash-strapped Brits are renting temporary coffins for funeral services before having their loved ones buried in cardboard, the Sun reported on Monday. Funeral directors say the cost-saving measure is becoming more popular as Brits struggle with a skyrocketing cost of living.

A temporary coffin is obtained for the day of the funeral and is returned afterward. The deceased is placed into a cheap and lightweight โ€˜innerโ€™ coffin, which sits inside the rented casket. This outer coffin is then removed after the service, leaving the bod...

The US has delivered 80% of the promised howitzers and 5,000 Javelins to Kiev so far, Washington said

Some 80% of the M777 howitzers and half of the 155mm ammunition for them โ€“ promised to Ukraine by US President Joe Biden last month โ€“ have already been delivered, the Department of Defense said on Monday.

The US military also said it has delivered nearly all the counter-battery and anti-aircraft radars and 5,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles, but no helicopters just yet.

The figures came from a background briefing at the Pentagon on Monday, where an unnamed US defense official gave reporters the off...

The network has flagged 11 articles that contained plagiarized information

NBC News apologized to its readers on Monday for eleven articles over the past year that contained plagiarized passages. The network did not retract the stories, however, but removed the problematic paragraphs and added editorsโ€™ notes to them. The Comcast-owned network also didn't name the reporter at fault. Other outlets were not so circumspect, however.

The eleven articles โ€œcontained passages from other news organizations that were used without attribution,โ€ NBC said in a...

The Non-Independence of Western-Funded โ€œIndependent Mediaโ€ in Ukraine with Alan MacLeod
MintPress News (RSS)

In this edition of The Watchdog Podcast, Lowkey talks to Alan MacLeod about Ukraine, how the media is covering the conflict, and the promotion of supposedly โ€œindependentโ€ Ukrainian media outlets that are quietly being funded by Western governments.

Chief among these is The Kyiv Independent, a newspaper that was barely three months old at the time of the Russian invasion but has shot to prominence in the West, being relentlessly promoted on television and radio and in print. As a result, it has managed to garner over two million followers on Twitter and raise millions of dollars in crowdfunding.

However, far less known...

Turkey reveals its position on NATO defense

NATO has โ€œno intentionโ€ of intervening in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, according to Turkish FM Mevlut Cavusoglu โ€“ but he vowed Sunday that his country would respond to any attack on a NATO ally.

Russian FM Sergey Lavrov has accused NATO of โ€œessentially going to war with Russia,โ€ while Vladimir Putin warned outside players against intervening in the conflict last week, threatening to unleash a โ€œswift, lightning-fastโ€ response should Russiaโ€™s security be put at risk.

Turkey has sought to maintain relations with both the bloc and Moscow since Russiaโ€™s operation in Ukraine began in February. It has sold its domestically-produced Bayraktar drones to Ukraine but has refused to impose sanctions on Russia.
