The US government finds cause for alarm in โ€œlarge social media platformsโ€

Billionaire Elon Muskโ€™s acquisition of social media giant Twitter has the White House backing away from its embrace of such mega platforms. โ€œNo matter who owns or runs Twitter, the president has long been concerned about the power of large social media platforms, the power they have over our daily lives,โ€ White House press secretary Jen Psaki stated during a press briefing on Monday after Musk officially bought Twitter for $44 billion.

Musk finalized the purchase of the social media giant on Monday, paying $44 billion to take sole ownership. He promised to root out spam and bots by authenticating human users, and to make the platform a bastion of free speech.

โ€œWeโ€™re not asking Finland or Sweden to change their name to Ikea,โ€ the Croatian president said

Finland and Sweden joining NATO is โ€œvery dangerous charlatanryโ€ and amounts to provoking Russia, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said on Tuesday. Zagreb will refuse to ratify their membership until the US and EU pressure the neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina into guaranteeing ethnic Croats their basic voting rights, Milanovic added.

โ€œAs far as Iโ€™m concerned, they can get into NATO, they can poke the rabid bear in the eye with a pen,โ€ Milanovic told reporters in Zagre...

US Defense Chief Explains Goal to โ€˜Weaken Russiaโ€™

Lloyd Austin has expanded on Washingtonโ€™s stated goal to โ€˜weaken Russiaโ€™ during its military action in Ukraine.

According to Austin, Moscowโ€™s capabilities are less than they were prior to the start of the conflict due to casualties and equipment destroyed. The economic sanctions are then supposed to prevent Russia from reinforcing.

The official also added that he still expects Ukraine to at some point apply for NATO membership, an issue the Kremlin cited as a key reason for its ongoing military involvement.
