Meta vs UK Watchdog: Giphy SHOWDOWN Begins

Meta will launch a huge antitrust court battle this week against the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority for ordering their $315MN acquisition of Giphy to be reversed following a probe last year.

The CMA instructed Meta to sell the GIF search engine arguing that it gave the platform an unfair market advantage, becoming the first global regulator to order a Big Tech company to unwind a completed deal.

Former CMA director Tom Smith explained it was unlikely the CMA would lose the case, as the Competition Appeal Tribunal will only look at the decision’s legality - not the investigation itself.
