Grounded Russian cargo ships dent French budget

The French authorities are spending thousands of euros on the maintenance of Russian cargo ships, which are detained in the countryโ€™s ports due to Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia, France 2 TV reports.

According to the media, while ship owners are seeking the greenlight to customs passage in courts, the port authorities are having trouble dealing with the ships. They have to pay to have the ships moved around whenever docking space for other vessels is lacking, while trade unions have to take care of sailors who have not been ashore for nearly 50 days.

Australia warns China of โ€˜red lineโ€™

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison declared on Sunday that a Chinese military base on the Solomon Islands would be an unacceptable โ€œred line,โ€ without adding how Canberra would retaliate.

Morrisonโ€™s government and the United States are scrambling to respond to a recently-signed security deal between the islands and Beijing, which they consider an โ€œaggressiveโ€ move.

โ€œWorking together with our partners in New Zealand and of course the United States, I share the same red line that the United States has when it comes to these issues,โ€ Morrison said. โ€œWe wonโ€™t be having Chinese military naval bases in our region on our doorstep.โ€

Extreme poverty in India has been cut by half, World Bank says

Extreme poverty in India, the second-most populous country in the world, is estimated to have declined by 12.3 percentage points between 2011 to 2019, the Economic Times reported on Monday, citing a World Bank Policy Research Working Paper.

According to the report, the count dropped from 22.5% in 2011 to 10.2% in 2019 and the decline in rural areas was much higher than in urban areas.

The paper reportedly followed two approaches to estimating extreme poverty. โ€œBoth approaches yield qualitatively similar levels and trends in headcount poverty estimated at the $1.90 line: Poverty is about 12.3 percentage points lower in 2019 than 2011,โ€ it said.
