Chile’s Record-Breaking Drought Sparks Water Rationing Plans

Chilean authorities have hatched a four-stage plan for water rationing for the capital city Santiago’s 6MN residents, as the country enters a record 13th year of drought.

It's estimated that national water availability has dropped to 37% over the last 30 years, while the two key rivers feeding most of Santiago’s water are dwindling to dangerously low levels.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates commented on anti-vaccine activists and conspiracy theories during a recent speech in Canada, insisting his efforts have “saved tens of millions of lives” as protesters gathered outside the event to denounce him.  

After delivering a talk on how to stop the next health crisis at the TED2022 conference in Vancouver on Tuesday, Gates addressed critics demonstrating at the venue, saying the protest was “somewhat ironic.”

Europol launches ‘Operation Oscar’ to hunt down sanctioned Russian assets in the EU

Europol will be joined by other EU agencies to support probes into alleged violations of economic and trade restrictions placed on Moscow.

As part of a year-long operation, Europol plans to centralize and analyze the data coming from member states “to identify international links, criminal groups and suspects, as well as new criminal trends and patterns.”

Meanwhile border control agency Frontex will contribute by “enhancing the scrutiny” of sanctioned individuals, who may try to enter the EU by air, land or sea.

Asian Outlets Rush to Fill Vacuum left by Western Stores Departing Russia

Some Indian retailers are preparing to enter the Russian market, after giant brands like Zara, H&M and Ikea have decided to leave the country.

Four Indian companies, including Killer Jeans and the Maspar furnishing stores, have signed preliminary agreements with Russian firms.

The Russian Council of Shopping Centers has also expressed an interest in inviting Iranian clothing chains to fill vacant market niches.

Gold Prices Hold Steady as Investors Dread US Inflation Data

Right before the publication of the US inflation analytics on Tuesday, gold prices creeped 0.1% higher to $1,955.61 per ounce, despite previously hitting its monthly peak.

"A higher-than-expected headline US CPI print may nudge spot gold closer to the psychologically important $2,000 level, considering bullion's time-honoured role as an inflation hedge," an expert told Reuters.

The new data will likely prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates by some 50 basis points come May.
