The European Union has devolved to the level of โNATOโs economic relations department,โ Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed on Saturday.
Following his visit to Ukraine, the EUโs foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, tweeted: โThis war must be won on the battlefield.โ The militant remarks coming from a diplomat prompted a reaction from Moscow.
โSo much for โeconomic organization.โ This is no longer the European Union. It's just NATO's economic relations department,โ Zakharova wrote.

Sanctions push BRICS states towards closer ties โ Moscow
Ukraine-related Western sanctions are pushing BRICS countries into closer economic cooperation at an accelerated pace, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said on Saturday during the first meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors of the BRICS countries, chaired by China.
According to the finance minister, the โcurrent crisis is man-made,โ and the BRICS member states โ Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa โ โhave all the necessary tools to mitigate its consequences for their respective economies and the global economy on a broader scale.โ
Siluanov says the current US dollar-based international financial system should be reformed to ensure โindependence and continuity of economic processes.โ

Global food prices surged to a historic high last month on grain and edible oil supply woes brought about by the conflict in Ukraine, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Friday.
โWorld food commodity prices made a significant leap in March to reach their highest levels ever, as war in the Black Sea region spread shocks through markets for staple grains and vegetable oils,โ the FAO said in a statement.

NATO to station permanent force in east โ Stoltenberg
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said that the bloc will deploy a permanent full-scale military force on the eastern flank to deter Russia. The move comes in response to Moscowโs military campaign against Ukraine.
In an interview published by The Telegraph on Saturday, Stoltenberg explained that the US-led military organisation has been focused on โa very fundamental transformationโ in order to better reflect the โnew realityโ in Europe.
โWe have now asked our military commanders to provide options for what we call a reset, a more longer-term adaptation of NATO,โ he said, adding that the decisions on the matter are expected at the blocโs summit in Madrid, Spain in June.
