Russians ditching dollars and euros for yuan – survey

Russian banks saw a sharp increase in the number of Chinese yuan accounts last month, a survey by financial daily Kommersant has found.

According to the publication, Russian citizens were actively converting their forex savings to the Chinese currency, while the number of new accounts denominated in yuan also grew significantly.

At Tinkoff Bank, for instance, the volume of funds held in yuan has surged eight times. MTS Bank reported a four-fold increase, as did the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development, while Bank Saint Petersburg saw a 3.5-fold rise.

Swedish opposition party may change stance on joining NATO

A key opposition party in Sweden will reportedly look to switch its stance on whether the country should join NATO if neighboring Finland applies for membership, potentially clearing the way for legislation calling to end the country’s long history of military neutrality.

Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Akesson told Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet on Saturday that he’s considering a change in stance on NATO membership in light of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. If Finland seeks to join the Brussels-based alliance, he said he will recommend that his party advocate doing the same.

Boris Johnson promises more weapons during surprise visit to Kiev

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made an unannounced visit to Kiev on Saturday, during which he pledged 120 armored vehicles and new anti-ship missile systems to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s regime. Johnson authorized a separate military aid package the day before, and also promised Ukraine $500 million in World Bank loans.

“Today I met my friend President Zelensky in Kiev as a show of our unwavering support for the people of Ukraine,” Johnson tweeted, shortly after news of his unannounced trip to the Ukrainian capital broke.

“We're setting out a new package of financial and military aid which is a testament of our commitment to his country's struggle against Russia’s barbaric campaign,” he added.
