Influencer says White House used TikTok stars as ‘pawns’

TikTok celebrity and self-described “Gen Z Historian” Khalil Greene has criticized his fellow influencers for telling their fans “verbatim” what the Biden administration wanted them to say on the Ukraine conflict.

Greene said that he understands why conservatives said that the young influencers were “used as pawns by the White House.”

Greene was one of 30 social media creators invited to a video conference by the White House last month, during which Press Secretary Jen Psaki laid out the US’ policy on Ukraine and Russia, so that the message could then be spread to their millions of followers.

'Recession shock coming,' major US bank warns

The macroeconomic picture is deteriorating rapidly and could push the US economy into recession as the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy to tame surging inflation, Bank of America (BofA) warned on Friday.

"Inflation shock worsening, rates shock just beginning, recession shock coming," BofA's chief investment strategist, Michael Hartnett, wrote in a weekly note to clients, seen by Reuters. He added that in this context, cash, volatility, commodities and cryptocurrencies could outperform bonds and stocks.

NATO kept doors open for Russia, Clinton reveals

Former US President Bill Clinton says he told the Russian leadership that Moscow could one day join NATO. Clinton said he brought this point before the late Boris Yeltsin, who governed Russia between 1991 and 1999, and then before President Vladimir Putin.

“We left the door open for Russia’s eventual membership in NATO, something I made clear to Yeltsin and later confirmed to his successor, Vladimir Putin,” the former US president wrote in an op-ed published in The Atlantic on Thursday.

Xi and Duterte issue statement on disputed waterway

Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte spoke of the need to maintain diplomatic calm in the contested waterways of the South China Sea during an hour-long telephone summit on Friday.

“The leaders stressed the need to exert all efforts to maintain peace, security and stability in the South China Sea by exercising restraint, dissipating tensions and working on a mutually agreeable framework for functional cooperation,” Duterte’s office said in a statement, adding that both nations’ leaders were willing to “broaden the space for positive engagements” despite existing disputes.
