UK announces $12bn emergency package to soften 54% energy price hike

The UK government has pledged $12bn cash to soften the blow of Thursdayโ€™s 54% energy price cap rise - but citizens will have to pay it back.

The measures have been lambasted by energy experts who expect the cap to rise to over $3,000 per year by October. However, calls for a windfall tax on oil companies was rejected by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, despite Shell posting its highest quarter profits in 8 years.

Sunak has overseen pandemic support spending that could run up to almost $550bn as the Bank of England admitted inflation will soon edge over 7%.
