President Biden’s announcement came after the ransomware group ‘DarkSide,’ a cyber-criminal outfit, acknowledged the Colonial fuel pipeline attack in a public statement. The attack, according to the World Economic Forum experts "could become one of the most expensive attacks to an economy".

DarkSide said they are “apolitical” and stated their ‘goal is to make money, not create problems for society.’

The group also indicated it will “introduce moderation” - to check which companies partners plan to encrypt - to “avoid social consequences in the future.”

Western media had earlier labelled the Colonial fuel pipeline hackers as being linked to Russia.

NBC News even saying the hackers were “often freelance for the Kremlin.”
