NHS leaders and health officials fear there is a realistic possibility 60,000 people could die from flu this winter, as the government renewed calls for people to get vaccinated against the influenza virus as soon as possible.
Cases of coronavirus, flu and other respiratory infections are likely to surge in the months ahead, experts say, culminating in increased hospitalisations and rising pressure on health services across England.
Deputy chief medical officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said the lack of flu last year made the threat this winter a โsignificant public health concernโ.
A lack of population immunity due to its suppression over the past year by Covid restrictions could contribute to between 15,000 and 60,000 flu deaths, according to modelling from the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Older people in Ireland may have no choice but to move out of their own homes, because they cannot access the care and support services they need to continue living independently.
That is according to Sage Advocacy, which provides support to older people, vulnerable adults and healthcare patients.
The organisation said a national crisis is unfolding that could result in older people having to leave their homes against their will because of a shortage of available carers.
Joan Fisher, 83 is her husband Robin's main carer. Born in Dublin, she moved the UK in her late teens/early 20s where she trained as a nurse.

A cashless society is incoming and it is the worse thing that can ever happen.
More than a third of Bank of Ireland branches across the country will close their doors for the last time today.
The bank is ceasing services at 88 locations as part of significant changes to its branch network and local banking services first announced in March.
It said that over the last three years, there has been a 60% drop in the number of customers visiting the branches in question, with a rise in those using online services.
Bank of Ireland said an arrangement with An Post, to allow for lodgements and withdrawals, will "protect local access to over-the-counter banking".
