Japan has passed a bill revising its national immigration law which permits authorities to deport foreign nationals who apply for refugee status more than twice and fail to provide legitimate justification. Opponents have raised concerns that some individuals could be repatriated to countries where they may face persecution or even lose their lives. Left-wing political leader Taro Yamamoto attempted to block the passage of the bill using physical force inside the parliament which led to scuffles. The reform will also allow foreign nationals facing deportation to stay outside of detention facilities under supervised conditions of relatives or supporters.
