At its 22 August summit, the BRICS are expected to announce a digital currency that will be pegged to a basket of commodities. A new deep, liquid bond market could create an instant reserve currency for the BRICS, whose currency will be backed by gold and sold through banks or other financial outlets.

A US appeals court has ruled that a Pennsylvania man convicted of a nonviolent crime cannot be stripped of his Second Amendment right to bear arms. Bryan Range was convicted in 1995 of one count of making a false statement to obtain food stamps. While his case was pending appeal, the US Supreme Court decided a landmark Second Amendment case which settled on a two-step test for the constitutionality of restrictions on firearms.

Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign has circulated a video featuring fake photos of Donald Trump hugging and kissing Anthony Fauci. Experts believe three of the images were made with AI, including a scene where Trump physically embraces Fauci. โMounting an utterly flimsy defence, figures in the DeSantis circle implied the images were obviously fake," reported Futurism. Far from being a one-off, "we will continue to see campaigns, state-sponsored actors, trolls and people who want to sow chaos use these fake images to drive their own agendas," warned University of California, Berkeley professor Hany Farid.

Earnings Improve, But Beware Of Trojan Horses
Most US analysts remain optimistic about earnings continuing to improve despite economic growth deteriorating as inflation increases and liquidity decreases. However, earnings are the byproduct of economic growth, and so the sustainability of record-high earnings and corporate profit margins is questionable. While some surges in demand were created by fiscal policies in response to the pandemic, reversion of activity will be worsened due to the pull forward of consumption, which could result in a proliferation of valuation declines.
