EVs Put Ford in Reverse: Company Projects $3bn Loss
Finance chief John Lawler tried to stave off investor worries after the announcement on Thursday, claiming โstartups lose money as they invest in capability, develop knowledge, build volume and gain share,โ vowing the company will erase its losses by 2026.
The Model e electric-vehicle divisionโs losses grew from $900m in 2021 to $2.1bn in 2022, due in part, Lawler said, to the construction of two battery-cell factories in Kentucky and one in Tennessee.
It took more than ten years for main competitor Tesla to stop losing money and posting consistent profits - its 2022 operating margin stood at 16.8%, with a cost advantage of over $10,000 per electric car over Ford.
