Fyodor Lukyanov: Here's the real reason why Russia and China want to replace the US-led international order
RT World News (RSS)

The two powers share the same goal, but circumstance dictates they have to take different roads to make it happen

Russia and China donโ€™t fit into the international system built under Western auspices after the Cold War. They are therefore in favor of replacing it. And it is easier to change it together.

โ€œWe hope the world will become a better place, and we have reason to believe it will. At the same time, we are well aware that the future is bright, but the road there is winding.โ€

This statement by Xi Jinping, which echoes a similar argument made by Mao Zedong in...

The new appointee will have a role in supporting exiled forces opposing the government of Belarus

The US government will โ€œvery soonโ€ have a special envoy for Belarus, to coordinate Washingtonโ€™s efforts to bolster the countryโ€™s Lithuania-based opposition, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told senators.

The pledge was made during a visit to the US by Belarusian opposition figure Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who urged Western nations to โ€œde-recognizeโ€ the government in Minsk.

Blinken was questioned about the lack of a special envoy for Belarus by Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire during...

French Activists File Notre Dame English-Only Translation Complaint

A group of French language activists has filed a legal complaint about translations at the Notre Dame only containing translations in English, contravening a 1994 law demanding at least two other languages on public signs.

Defense of the French Language has successfully campaigned to add languages to signs at the Eiffel Tower, claiming the law โ€œprotects French because it promotes linguistic pluralism.โ€

The activists have also filed legal complaints against 20 bodies for their use of English, including Charles de Gaulle airport, the national postal service, and the world-famous Sorbonne โ€œbusiness school.โ€

Czech leader Petr Pavel is concerned about a lack of unity in the approach to Russia and China

Czech President Petr Pavel has cautioned EU countries against overconfidence and competing with each other, and instead urged the West to present a united front against Russia and China.

Speaking on Tuesday at a debate hosted by the German Council for Foreign Relations, the Czech leader called on EU states to adhere to โ€œWestern valuesโ€ and prioritize cooperation and unity, not only to oppose Moscow, but also to counter Beijingโ€™s growing influence.

Prague has already sent Kiev everything it can from its weapons stockpiles, Czech President Petr Pavel says

The Czech Republic has already done everything it can to help Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, President Petr Pavel has said. The nationโ€™s capacity to produce more ammunition is limited due to workforce shortages, he added.

โ€œWe have not only delivered what we could from our own stocks, but also bought material abroad,โ€ Pavel said in an interview with Germanyโ€™s Suddeutsche Zeitung on Wednesday.

The Czech Republic is still capable of producing some air defenses and ammunition that Ukraine needs, but itโ€™s <... ...

The International Olympic Committee has defended plans to include Russian and Belarusian athletes at the Paris 2024 Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) must not act as a โ€œpolitical referee,โ€ according to its president, Thomas Bach. The organization has faced a backlash for its plans to reinstate Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competition ahead of the Paris Games in 2024.

Speaking at the Ruhr Political Festival in Essen, Germany on Wednesday, Bach said that the IOC must stay out of political disputes to preserve its power as a unifying force on the international stage....

UK interest rates raised to 4.25% by Bank of England

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee voted to raise the Bank Rate to 4.25% from 4%, the highest level since October 2008, the start of the financial crisis.

Global central banks continue the cycle of tightening monetary policy to fight inflation.

This is the 11th straight increase in UK interest rates, even though the Bank of England believes that inflation will fall sharply in the next few months.

CPI inflation is still expected to "fall significantly" in Q2 2023, to a lower rate than anticipated in the February Report, it says, partly due to the freeze on household energy bills.
