This is where liquidity risk becomes critical.
Under normal market conditions, deep order books, tight bid-ask spreads, and sufficient buyers and sellers allow trades to execute with relatively little price impact.
But during market stress, everything can change.
What happens when liquidity disappears?
Order books become thinner — Fewer buyers are available at each price level.
Spreads widen — The gap between buying and selling prices increases.
Slippage rises — Orders execute at less favorable prices than expected.
Market impact increases — Large sell orders may push prices significantly lower.
This exposes an important distinction:
Mark-to-Market Value: What your position appears to be worth at current market prices.
Realizable Value: What you can actually receive when selling under prevailing market conditions.
