About 90% of all startups fail according to Forbes. So working for a startup is extremely risky especially when you have a family to provide for.
That’s why startups are willing to offer very generous terms even for remote international team members.

The average time an employee spends in a company is about 2.5 years. How can you ensure the startup you are hired to work for doesn’t fail within your estimate 2.5-year term with them?

The way I do it, I make sure the startup is funded, has got existing user-base, and is making at least as much revenue to at least cover its own operational spendings. Here in my channel I try to specify if startup are funded.

What does funding mean for a startup? Right, it means more open positions, more resources for marketing, design and more chance for them to survive. So if you decide to go for a job at a startup, make sure they have been funded and have got money to maintain the work on their work for at least 2-3 upcoming years.

And today is for one of this kind of startups - Sourcegraph. They are a late-stage startup and they were $125M Series D on $2.6B valuation for universal code search tool last summer. I somehow missed their series D announcement but I’m glad I found it now because they are still hiring and they have got existing team members in St.Petersburg, Russia too.

Circle.so raised $24.7 million in series A led by Tiger Global earlier in December, this led to new roles that they've opened up on their careers pages. They are building a platfom that they themselves describe as Shopify for creator/brand-led communities.

It hasn’t been long since Facebook officially coined the term “metaverse” and it is officially a new buzzword for the next coule of years and lots of companies have since adopted the term for their marketing strategies. Well, I’m not surprized since this shit sells and it sells well.

One of the market segments where “metaverse” term is applicable is remote work, online communication, remote work spaces, remote work infrastructure. So today I would like to introduce Gather. They are building a “metaverse” virtual office that looks fun. I’ve been able to use it with an actual team of people and it is super cool.

They raised $26M in Series A back in March of 2021 and 50M in Series B in November! A whopping total of $76M within several months. Boy, appearently the “metaverse” buzzword indeed sells well! They intend to use the funds to continue to expand operations and its business reach.

Today I spent some time reading a scientific essay on boredom written by one of my former colleagues. What can be more boring than reading an essay on boredom?! Just kidding, the essay turned out to be more fun than I anticipated.

But to answer my question. What can seem to be more boring than the appearance of an essay on boredom? Right, it is developing and testing payment methods.

One of the most frequent questions about remote work with international companies is the one about time zones. Nobody wants you to work night shifts. It is not healthy, it is not productive and you can’t do it long term. So there are three cases possible:

- The company is requiring that a team member ensures a 3-4h overlap during week days. And this is the most common one.
- The company is hiring specifically in your time zone to ensure service coverage while the other part of the team is asleep. This is very common for support and engineering roles. This waythey ensure there is always someone to monitor the system and to react in case of an emergency.
- The company minimized direct communication and emprace asynchronous communication. This is quite rare but it does exit.

I’ve been experimenting with Zettlekasten note-taking method and I’ve been enjoying it. I’ve tried tools like Obsidian, RoamResearch, Notion, Goodnotes. I even attempted to apply for a QA role at Goodnotes last summer.

Today I ran into RemNote, they offer a similar note-taking tool for as they say “thinking and learning”. It is an MIT startup with an initial seed round of 2.8M investment in September 2021.

They are hiring remotely, they are a team of 14 people. It is great opprotunity to get experience working at a small startup, close to the founders and decision makers — a valuable experience that you will never get at a large company. As a contractor, I need to take care of my own health insurance. I’ve been looking into various options. With things going on in Ukraine and Russia, I’ve been feeling stressed and discouraged for the past two weeks. It is painful to see the world and the future that we’ve been building for ourselves and our families to fall apart without being able to prevent it.

I’ve been trying to help my friends in both countries to go through the events as well as to save my own ass. I’m finally relatively safe and looking into various options to get a legal entity outside of Russia to be able to continue working and getting paid.

I’ve been advocating for location independence since the inception of this channel and I think it is important as never before. Location independence means I live in one place, own a legal entity in another, work with clients and customers from a third place and I have a backup plan for each.

Thank you for your reactions under the previous publication! As promised I’d like to share some of my ideas about re-locating my legal entity outside of Russia for the time being. Actually, I’m looking for al long term solution here as I don’t see myself paying any more taxes to support violence towards my friends, colleagues and their families and homes as well as my own country and my business.

So currently, I have two goals, one is to restore my payments from both my employeer and my consulting business. To do this, I’m considering getting digital nomad visas but they seem to still require some form of legal entity outside of the destination country which is not an option for me.

Another option I’m considering is UAE. A sole establishment there which seems to be curious because of no tax on income from outside UAE. There are free trade zones in other coutries as well which I’m reading up on. UAE seems to be a good option for me as they have a better reputation than other countries plus they are not in any of the economic black lists.

Another argument for UAE is that with their reputation I can be charging a higher rate for my services without having the thoughts of being associated with a third world country. It will be an additional argument to support my confidence during negotiations ragardless of where I’m going to be located atm.

A thought that resonated with me today is “GO WHERE YOU’RE TREATED BEST!” by Andrew Henderson the Nomad Capitalist.

Having everything in one location i.e. real estate, business, investement is never a winning strategy and with the global world it is sad not to be using the options that the world is offering. I view these challenges that I’m running into right now as a fun quest for feaguring out a recipe that will work for me.

He only mentions specific countries that have this policy though. But there other locations e.g. individual US states that have it as well. This policy may also apply under specific conditions e.g. if you are not a tax resident of a specific country you might be exepmt from their local income taxes.
