I get asked a lot about how to optimize resumes and cover letters for the global tech market. When I started my remote job search back in 2015, I didn't know most of the things I know now and it took me almost 2 years before I landed my first remote jobs in tech. I learned everything the hard way and now it takes me 2 months to find a new remote job.

There are a lot of things that make your resume more appealing for global remote companies. Creator economy is at the top of the buzzword chat of the year. As I’m implementing my own consulting services and digital products, I’ve been looking into a few different payments options that I can use.

“The future of work in no work” according to the founder of Gumroad and we are slowly making our way there. As their next step, lots of companies have joined the new 4-day workweek initiative. There are studies showing that reducing the number of work hours leads to increased productivity. You can add the 4-day workweek to the list of potential benefits you can negotiate for with global remote companies.

One of the companies that have switched to 4-day workweek is Buffer. They tested the new format in 2020 and in 2021 they officially stated that they are gonna keep this format without cutting the pay. Yay! Way to go, Buffer! Buffer is the leader of work culture, they were the first ones to embrace fully remote work and starting to hire globally.

The reason why I’m convinced 4-day workweek is going to be a reality for many of us soon is the history of how we got to the 40-hour 5-day workweek. It is one aspect of the work culture that hasn’t had any changes for the last 50-60 years. The technology and the efficiency of people have advanced since then. So it is quite reasonable for the workers to be demanding to reduce the number of work hours.


Historical insight:

Before 1817 people all over the world were working 80-100 hours a week. In 1817 Robert Owen a Welsh manufacturer came up with the idea of dividing the day into three equal parts. “Eight hours labor, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest”. The idea didn’t stick in Europe but gained popularity in the States labor unions.

It wasn’t until 1926 that five-day 40-hour workweek became common practice in the States with Henry Ford stating that “It is high time to rid ourselves of the notion that leisure for workmen is either lost time or a class privilege.” The workweek duration was officially limited to 40-hours by the US legislature in 1940.

The Soviet Union adopted the 48-hour workweek in 1917. There was a period when the government was testing 30-35 hour-workweek between 1964-1967 which was the world’s record at that time. But in 1967 they stopped that initiative and moved to the 41-hour 5-day workweek. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia adopted the standard 40-hour workweek.

A pretty urgent job opening.

Buffer — the company that I mentioned in the previous post — is hiring a Customer Support person in GMT+7/+13 timezones.

As I come from Siberia (GMT+9), I can’t help but share this opportunities immediately with you guys.

September-October are hot months for the job market in both in US and Russia. In the summer is it hard to do technical interview since lots of the staff is out enjoying their summer vacations.

Labor Day in the US is considered the “unofficial end of summer” as it marks the end of the season. So if you are considering to start searching for a new remote job, the best time is now end of September and October.

Even companies like Basecamp and Buffer start being active in these month when they usually don’t have that many job opening. Basecamp is hiring for two roles this season. Mobile Programmers and Customer Support Representative (EU / APAC).

I’m especially excited about the role of Customer Support Rep as it is open for the candidates from Russia. The candidate must reside in GMT+XX time zones meaning that candidates can apply from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other east hemisphere locations. The pay is starting from 70,000 USD / annually ragardless of the location.

Basecamp are known to be pioneers of remote work. Basecamp along with other pioneers have coined most of the global IT work culture and ethics as we know it. If you haven’t read their book about remote work, I highly recommend you check it out.

Another app that is trying to innovate the way people read is Matter. They are trying to combine a reading app with a social app. This is definitely not the first attempt to do so. When you get hired for a remote job, you need to sign an independent contract agreement with the company hiring. Most of the companies that I see use digital contracts, e-signing and don't bother with actual paperwork. There are many web apps that provide e-signing like HelloSign, DocuSign, PandaDoc.

Today is for PSPDFkit. They are a startup from Vienna, Austria that provides APIs and an SDK that developers use to power document processing features like e-signing, document viewing and editing, collaboration and much more.

They have just raised €100 million ($116 million) of funding and they are hiring for a few roles atm. They have team members in 17 countries and growing.
