📍🦡🧀 Culture Share Saturday: Wisconsin

Why is Wisconsin called the Badger State?
In the 1800s, lead miners lived underground like badgers to survive harsh winters!

Wisconsin is in the Midwest,
near the Great Lakes, and is famous for dairy products like milk and cheese.

📚 Fun Fact: Wisconsin was home to the first U.S. kindergarten in 1856. From humble beginnings, it became a nationwide tradition!

Classroom Discussion:
•
Does your region in Russia have a fun or interesting nickname?
• What “firsts” can your region claim?
• What are your favorite American foods with dairy? What dairy products do you eat or drink in Russia?

✨ Today we celebrate Presidents’ Day in the United States ✨

Presidents’ Day is a U.S. holiday that honors American presidents — past and present — and invites reflection on leadership, history, and civic values.
In English classrooms, it’s a great opportunity to explore:
famous U.S. presidents and their impact
leadership qualities and decision-making
how national holidays reflect a country’s values
🧑‍🏫 Classroom idea: Ask students to choose a historical or modern leader (from any country) and describe: 1️⃣ one challenge they faced 2️⃣ one quality that made them effective

📚 Teaching Tip Tuesday: Build Speaking Confidence with Routines! 🎙️

Want to help students become more confident speakers? Try using weekly and daily routines!

Start with short, low-pressure activities like:
• Daily question of the day
• Quick partner talks
• Small group discussions

When students practice speaking a little every day, they become more comfortable sharing ideas. Over time, their confidence grows — and so do their communication skills.💬✨

🎉 Friday Fun: Idiom Spotlight — “Break the Ice” 🧊

Sometimes it can be hard to get a conversation started — in class, at a meeting, or before giving a speech. That’s when we break the ice!

👉 To break the ice means to say or do something that helps people relax and start interacting.

🎤 Speaking tip: When giving a speech, try breaking the ice by asking the audience a quick show-of-hands question or sharing a short, relatable moment. It helps create a connection right away.

🇺🇸✨ Culture Share Saturday: Discover Michigan! ✨🇺🇸

📅 Did you know? Michigan became the 26th state in the United States on January 26, 1837. Its nickname is “The Wolverine State” 🐾 — even though wolverines are rarely found there today!

🌊 Geography fun fact: A peninsula is land almost surrounded by water but connected to the mainland. Thanks to the Great Lakes, Michigan has two peninsulas! The Lower Peninsula is famously shaped like a left mitten 🧤.

📬 One of a kind: Michigan is home to the only floating post office in the world 🚤📦. Mail is delivered by boat across the Great Lakes to island communities.

🚗 Motor City: Detroit earned the nickname “Motor City” because it became the center of the U.S. automobile industry, home to companies like Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler.

🤔 Classroom Discussion
•
Does your region have a fun or interesting nickname?
• What’s a famous industry or product from your hometown or country?
• Do you know of any other geographical features that are shaped like another object?

🗣️ Teaching Tip Tuesday: The English Stress System

Feeling stressed about teaching stress? Don’t worry — this is the good kind of stress. 😄

Here’s a quick refresher for the classroom:
🔹 Word Stress – One syllable takes prominence: REcord vs. reCORD.
🔹 Sentence Stress – Content words carry meaning: “I NEED to CALL my FRIEND.”
🔹 Contrastive Stress – Shifting stress changes focus: “I said HE stole the money.”
🔹 Rhythm & Timing – English is stress-timed: “I WANT to GO to the STORE.” (regular beats on stressed syllables)

👏 Try marking stress in dialogues or having students tap the rhythm to build awareness.
