🌟 Vocabulary Wednesday: Extracurricular 🌟

The word extracurricular comes from Latin extra, meaning “outside,” and curriculum, meaning “course.” It literally means activities outside the main course of study.

Extracurricular activities include things like sports teams, music clubs, volunteer work, and hobbies—anything students do beyond their regular academic classes. These activities help students develop social skills, leadership, and interests beyond textbooks.

In the US, extracurriculars play a huge role in school life. They’re seen as essential for building teamwork, time management, and leadership skills. Universities often look for students involved in extracurricular activities because it shows they are well-rounded and motivated beyond just good grades. For many students, extracurriculars are also a way to explore passions and build lifelong friendships.

🇺🇸 Fun fact: Over 80% of American high school students participate in at least one extracurricular activity during the school year!

To spark discussion in class, you can ask:

• What extracurricular activities are popular at your school?
• Why do you think extracurriculars are so valued in US schools?
• How can extracurricular activities help students in their future careers?
• Should all students participate in extracurriculars? Why or why not?
• How do extracurricular activities in your country compare to those in the US?

✏️ Fun Friday for Teachers ✏️
Teaching: The only job where you steal things from home to bring to work.

Notebooks, scissors, tape, your favorite gel pens, and that one cute mug that somehow ended up on your desk forever — all fair game.

That glittery sticker pack you bought “just in case”? It’s now a classroom reward system. Those snacks you swore were for your afternoon break? Gone — claimed by a student who spelled “definitely” right for the first time. Even your last roll of tape? Sacrificed to the gods of group projects.

Because teaching isn’t just a job — it’s a full-contact scavenger hunt where your own home becomes your unofficial supply closet.

Here’s to the teachers who come to school carrying half their living room — and still make it look effortless. 💼🍎✂️

Culture Share Saturday: The Story Behind American School Mascots 🦅🐾

Did you know the word “mascot” comes from the French mascotte, meaning a lucky charm? Mascots originally symbolized good luck and protection.

In American schools, mascots became popular in the early 20th century to unite students and fans, inspire pride, and represent qualities like strength, courage, and agility. Today, they’re a big part of school spirit and culture!

Some popular mascots include:
🦅 Eagles (freedom, strength)
🐅 Tigers (power, bravery)
🐕 Bulldogs (determination, loyalty)
🐆 Wildcats (agility, independence)
🐆 Panthers (strength, mystery)

Ask your students:
What animal or symbol would represent your school?

Classroom activity:
• Have students choose or design their own mascot and describe its qualities in English.
• Encourage students to share their mascot stories with the class to practice speaking.

It’s a fun way to connect culture, language, and school spirit!

By designing tasks at varying levels of complexity, educators can ensure that each student is both challenged and supported appropriately, promoting engagement and growth for all learners.

🧠📖 Take a look at this example activity focused on understanding main ideas and supporting details. It’s designed with three tiers to meet students where they are: from foundational comprehension to more advanced analysis. This approach allows every student to work on the same essential concept while tailoring the task to their individual readiness, building confidence and mastery step by step.
