Gdansk aka Danzig was already controlled by the Nazi Party by 1937. It was a "free city" that was not officially part of Poland.

The idea that Germans in a city which the Nazi Party already controlled were being "massacred" by the Poles is absurd.

The Hitlerian propaganda of genocide was just a pretext to invade.

World War II had nothing to do with "economics" or imposing some econ system on Germany.

Britain's socialist labour party supported the war against Hitler and promptly nationalized 20% of British industry after the war, nationalized the central bank and implemented a welfare state. The Soviets got the eastern half of Germany and turned it fully socialist.

Roosevelt was no "capitalist" he was a closeted commie who was praised by the fascists as a fellow socialist before he became their enemy.

The South Tyrol Option Agreement shows the duplicity of Hitler on the question of German diaspora. He used the Danzig question as a beating stick against Poland and offered no deal to have those Germans move back to Germany peacefully, but he accepted such an agreement with the Italians who had been attempting to Italianize the German speakers in South Tyrol. Nor did he accuse the Italians of "genocide" like he did the Poles despite the Italians putting similar pressures on them to assimilate.

The reason was that Hitler wanted the Danzig Germans as a Trojan Horse inside Poland that he could use to make more territorial demands against Poland.

He could have easily invited them to move back to Germany like he did with those in South Tyrol but he did not because they were more useful as a hedge against Poland to kickstart the Lebensraum process.

In 1920 German dock workers in the free city of Danzig (under League of Nations control) went on strike to prevent Western aid in the form of weapons from getting to the Polish army fighting the Soviets in the east.

That's why Poland decided to build up the port of Gdynia so that these ethnic Germans with minimal loyalty to the Polish state couldn't sabotage them anymore.

Danzig was a Nazi-run city pretty much since 1933. It was a "free city" supervised by the League of Nations. The Poles were not running it.

The local Danzig police was NSDAP-aligned and they collaborated during the 1939 invasion. They were a fifth column acting on behalf of Hitler in Poland. This is precisely why countries aim to assimilate ethnic minorities so that they don't act in this way.
