White paper downloads

I was wondering if anyone had a good source of research papers. I read a lot of scientific journals etc and I like to read through the cited papers on articles that interest me, but I refuse to pay to access what I strongly belief should be open sourced for the benefit of progression.

Anyway, ranting aside lol, is there anywhere other than lib gen, which often doesn't have what I'm after?

Many thanks!!

Any way to browse RARBG by season packs?

I love RARBG's 'catalog' section; showing all torrents for just one tv show, including season packs, is a great addition to the site.

Is there any way to just browse the season pack torrents on RARBG?

State of Windows 10 piracy?

I ask this because I've been a Linux user on both server and workstation for the past several years. I'm thinking about finally building a new gaming PC and was curious about the state of pirating windows 10. Is this something that's pretty commonly done. Do I have to worry about any registration issues or the OS phoning home?

The digital media issue

Throughout the 80s and 90s I vaguely remember there were two media contenders for consumers to watch recorded videos. the VHS and Betamax. In someways I understand the better format lost, but following the DVD era, the better format Blue-Ray - with its better storage capacity managed to surpass HDDVD format. It was such a slow death for HDDVD, trying its best to hand on to market share.

Fast forward to today and we now have a plethora of online video services, it’s clear the future now resides in digital media. However, there are so many limitations imposed on these formats and once you buy the right to view these, technically you still don’t own the video and have to abide by the restrictions of the service provider.

It wouldn’t be a such a big deal you might ask - you just need to choose a provider to build up your online collection of videos. With an increasing amount of sources and no agreed standard, all the major players are trying to get on the band wagon.

I have already brought some videos from SkyQ mainly because of the convenience at the time. But I don’t like the idea I need to have an active SkyQ subscription - who’s to say I’ll always be a SkyQ customer. Sure, the videos may still be accessible on the mobile apps, but using the HDMI adaptor on iPhone is disabled for Sky apps. This is terribly annoying if you wanted to watch one of your videos in a hotel room- which I often find myself in for work. Why should paid content have more limitations on the way you consume the media than illegitimate ways of obtaining the media.

Another choice would be Amazon videos. Incidentally you can use the HDMI adaptor, but if you are on Apple, Apple impose restrictions preventing customers from from making in app purchases as Amazon would be subjected to 15-30% fees for digital media. This results in a poor consumer experience.

You have also the google play store, but the iOS app is not well established and requires a permanent internet connection.

What about Apple itself? One major benefit is that Apple TV is now being baked into new TVs. This is unusual for Apple, perhaps this is an attempt to improve market share. It’s a shame Apple haven’t adopted a HDMI ‘stick’ device as the market is there, and their airplay protocol is proprietary, so any airplay compatible device is unreliable and doesn’t support many video services apart from YouTube. One major drawback would mean you are locked in the Apple ecosystem as there aren’t any android apps, you would have to rip the DRM protection if this is still possible. I for one will not start building my digital collection on iTunes on the chance that I may move to android in future. Particularly after waiting a year for the next iPhone, to find out they have only added an extra camera.

I do wonder if Apple was less restrictive, ie, if they had Apple movies on android, whether it would be a more successful software vendor.

Quite a lot of these new digital formats are naturally restrictive. For instance, how do you share purchases with the rest of your family. Apple has tried to address this situation, but let’s not forget some of the benefits of old media formats such as: being able to re-sell the media second hand, or lend videos to family and friends.

Another issue with digital media is the price. Considering it uses 0 physical costs compared to their disk counter parts, I think more people would buy digital media than illegally downloading if it was half the price and there was a strong standard.

The solution? In my opinion, all digital providers should team together and have a transparent user profile which allows purchases to be consumed across any digital service. I recognise there is an element of commercial discussions surrounding which provider should serve digital content, but I think terms can be agreed based on which marketplace a supplier used. I only imagine this would work for everyone’s benefit.

But until then, not being able to decide what service provider to be locked into for the rest of my life makes it easy to see why download
ing videos from the pirate bay is still a popular choice today. Not because it is free - in fact, I am currently paying for many media services I am not making most use from: Sky Cinema; Netflix; Amazon Prime - but because it offers flexibility to consume content, and steam to hotel TVs.

In comparison, the music industry went through a similar process, first starting out with Napster and finally today, Spotify; Apple Music and Amazon Prime music allow you to consume almost any music ever recorded, whilst respecting the copyright owners.

I openly welcome feedback, what is being proposed to improve transport; ownership of media viewing rights and lastly what do the film distributors expect from consumers in terms of choosing one media platform to consume content.

Is it possible to get a notice while sharing through Google Drive?

I'd like to share a part of my collection on a forum using Google Drive links (I've the files uploaded on my GDrive), although I'm not entirely sure if it's safe to share (as opposed to downloading, which is no problem at all).

Is it possible to get a copyright notice when sharing stuff through Google Drive, or does it just end with an account suspension once you get caught? (Copyright notices should be taken seriously in Germany, so I want to avoid those at all cost)
