"Emergency" Lockscreen mistranslation in German

# TL;DR:

Lock screen: German button label "Notruf" must be "Notfall"

Lock Screen in German reads "emergency call" instead of emergency", potentially deterring live saving rescue personnel from accessing it, since it sounds like they would call their own hotline instead of accessing vital medical information.

/Tl;DR

On a locked, up to date android device in Germany, the Button labeled "Notruf" (emergency call) opens not only the emergency dialer but also the Emergency Information (blood type, allergies, medications, emergency contacts). The German label suggests it only places a call. First aiders and bystanders looking for that information have no reason to tap it, and some may avoid it for fear of accidentally calling 112 (emergency hotline in Europe).

The English source label is "Emergency", not "Emergency call". Other languages translate it correctly (Urgence, Emergencia, Emergenza, Noodgeval). Android's own German power menu already uses the correct translation "Notfall", as does the iPhone.

Change "Notruf" to "Notfall". It is a single string change with no layout risk, and it is potentially life-saving, because responders and first aiders would find critical medical information faster instead of being deterred.

I can't screenshot the Lockscreen top show the difference to the power menu. But since i lost a family member yesterday I want to bring attention to this issue and hope somebody can assist in correcting this very easy, potentially live saving issue. The wrong translation is also being applied to all current android devices set to German language locale, so potential impact is much larger than only pixel devices.

I’m genuinely starting to wonder if I’ve misunderstood Android users.

I launched my app on both platforms. Same features, same pricing, same experience.
But the difference in interest has been pretty surprising.

It’s a health journaling app. Nothing that relies on Apple’s ecosystem or gives iPhone users an advantage.

So what’s going on?

Do Android users expect more from free apps? Is it a subscription thing? Or is the Play Store just terrible for discovering smaller apps?

I’m not here to argue that one platform is better than the other. I’m actually trying to figure out what Android users value that I might be missing.

And if you’re thinking “maybe your app just isn’t that good”, fair enough. I’d genuinely like to hear why.

I built Moto Battery – a battery monitor app designed for Moto phones

Hey everyone 👋

I've been working on Moto Battery, a battery monitor app designed to feel at home on Motorola phones. It follows the Moto "Hello UI" look, picks up your wallpaper's system colours, and adapts to any screen size and font size.

https://preview.redd.it/j8hdc7flwmyh1.png?width=1940&format=png&auto=webp&s=8188284a5bb99df8a63c506f29a73618edca8640

What it does

\- Live readings – level, current (mA), power (W), temperature and voltage, updated every 3 seconds

\- Battery health – estimated capacity vs design capacity, wear level, charge cycles and a green / amber / red rating

\- Sessions – every charge, discharge and idle period with speed, mAh, time and temperature, plus a "when you charge" heatmap

\- Alarms – charge limit (e.g. unplug at 80%), low battery and high temperature, with a short tick-tick sound

\- Status bar icon showing live level, current or temperature next to the clock

\- Home-screen widgets and a Quick Settings tile

\- Interactive charts – tap or drag to read exact values

\- Privacy – no internet permission at all; everything stays on your phone

Tested on: edge 50 neo (Android 16), moto g67 power 5G (Android 16) and moto g13 (Android 14). It works on Android 8.0 and newer.

Looking for testers and contributors

I'd love feedback from people on other Moto models – especially razr, edge 40/50 series and older G phones. If you're interested in testing or helping improve it, comment with your model and Android version or send me a DM. Code contributions are welcome too; every change is reviewed before it goes in.

What would you want from a battery app on your Moto? Feedback welcome! 🔋

Not affiliated with or endorsed by Motorola – just a Moto fan who wanted a battery app that matched the phone.

Why does Android get so much hate on social media?

Genuinely curious. Whenever Android comes up I see people hating on it, but from what I can tell it’s not that bad? You can customize basically everything, there are phones at every price point, the file system actually lets you do stuff, and stuff like sideloading and default apps just works. Google’s apps are solid too.

Is there something I’m missing? Is it the update situation, the fragmentation, the “green bubble” thing, or the app quality compared to iOS? Or is it just the “Android bad” reflex?

Not trying to start a fight, just trying to understand the hate. Would love to hear from people who’ve actually switched between them.

If your car's GPS antenna is broken, Android Auto navigation is ruined. Let's get a "Force Phone GPS" toggle by +1'ing this Google Issue!

Hey everyone,

We all know that Android Auto defaults to the car's built-in GPS antenna. But here is a massive design flaw: when a car's GPS antenna fails, your navigation goes completely crazy.

Depending on the car model, repairing or replacing a built-in GPS antenna can cost hundreds of dollars, require dismantling the entire dashboard, or be completely impossible. Meanwhile, we have perfectly working GPS receivers right in our pockets, but Android Auto doesn't allow us to default to the phone's GPS.

I've created an official Feature Request on the Google Issue Tracker asking for a simple "Force Phone GPS" toggle (even if it's just hidden in the Developer Settings).

If we get enough votes, Google's triage team will have to notice it.

How you can help:

Click this link: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/577213793

Click the +1 button at the top right of the title.

🚨 Important Note: Please DO NOT leave comments like "Me too" or "Please fix" on the tracker. Google engineers consider "me too" comments as spam and they might lock the thread. Just hitting the +1 button is exactly what we need to increase its priority.

Thanks for the support! Let's hope we can get this basic quality-of-life feature added.
