Android 17 is way more than a "Cinnamon Bun" name - 5 hidden features Google didn't announce properly
I've been on Android 17 stable for 10 days on Pixel 7, and everyone is talking about App Bubbles and Handoff, but Google hid some crazy useful stuff:
1. Flashlight brightness slider is back and system-wide
You can finally control intensity from Quick Settings. 10% to 100%. Super useful at night.
2. Intrusion Logging is scary good
If someone tries to unlock your phone with wrong PIN or plugs into your phone, Android 17 creates an encrypted forensic log. You can see it in Settings > Security > Intrusion Logging. It's for journalists / activists but everyone should turn it on.
3. Contacts Picker finally works
Apps like Truecaller or WhatsApp can't ask for your full contact list anymore. You select only 5 contacts to share. Huge privacy win.
4. 16KB Page Size = actual smoothness
This sounds technical, but it's the reason my Pixel 7 feels like Pixel 9 now. Apps launch faster and scrolling is smoother. Developers had to update apps, but big apps already did.
5. eSIM transfer in 2 clicks
Moved my eSIM from old phone to new in literally 15 seconds. No carrier call needed. Settings - Network Transfer eSIM.
NFC, eSIM, 5G Advanced all work flawlessly. No, there is no 8G — we are still on 5G Advanced and 6G is 2030.
What hidden feature did you find in Android 17 that Google didn't talk about?

Senior-Proofing a ln Android Phone
My grandmother is a sweet, 90-something year old woman who uses her smartphone (Pixel 6A) for 4 main things: keeping in touch with her family, viewing photos of her great-grandchildren, browsing Facebook, and playing solitaire. Unfortunately the last two things cause MANY problems and I need the help of the community to find a solution.
What happens is she just clicks on things and they get installed on her phone. Just to give you a snapshot of the issues: In span of 4-days since I last cleaned her phone, she installed 23 versions of solitaire and some spammy app I couldn't target that resulted in pop-up ads in every app including Settings and the Play Store. At it's worst, she had upwards of 70 different solitaire apps because her advertising algorithm just shows her ads you more and more solitaire apps.
She's not on my Google family plan so I seemingly can't set up parental controls for her. Is there a way to lock down what gets installed? Is there a good launcher anyone can recommend? Is there a smartphone that is good for seniors because it's so limited (but can still play solitaire)?
Help me, Reddit. You might be my only hope.
EDIT: Sorry for the typo in the subject line.

Android 17's new Contacts Picker and Intrusion Logging are great for privacy
Been testing Android 17 stable. Two privacy improvements that stood out:
Contacts Picker now lets you share only selected contacts instead of full list, and Intrusion Logging keeps an encrypted log of failed unlock attempts.
Has anyone else enabled Intrusion Logging? Curious about battery impact.
Device: Pixel 7

"Emergency" Lockscreen mistranslation in German
# TL;DR:
Lock screen: German button label "Notruf" must be "Notfall"
Lock Screen in German reads "emergency call" instead of emergency", potentially deterring live saving rescue personnel from accessing it, since it sounds like they would call their own hotline instead of accessing vital medical information.
/Tl;DR
On a locked, up to date android device in Germany, the Button labeled "Notruf" (emergency call) opens not only the emergency dialer but also the Emergency Information (blood type, allergies, medications, emergency contacts). The German label suggests it only places a call. First aiders and bystanders looking for that information have no reason to tap it, and some may avoid it for fear of accidentally calling 112 (emergency hotline in Europe).
The English source label is "Emergency", not "Emergency call". Other languages translate it correctly (Urgence, Emergencia, Emergenza, Noodgeval). Android's own German power menu already uses the correct translation "Notfall", as does the iPhone.
Change "Notruf" to "Notfall". It is a single string change with no layout risk, and it is potentially life-saving, because responders and first aiders would find critical medical information faster instead of being deterred.
I can't screenshot the Lockscreen top show the difference to the power menu. But since i lost a family member yesterday I want to bring attention to this issue and hope somebody can assist in correcting this very easy, potentially live saving issue. The wrong translation is also being applied to all current android devices set to German language locale, so potential impact is much larger than only pixel devices.

I’m genuinely starting to wonder if I’ve misunderstood Android users.
I launched my app on both platforms. Same features, same pricing, same experience.
But the difference in interest has been pretty surprising.
It’s a health journaling app. Nothing that relies on Apple’s ecosystem or gives iPhone users an advantage.
So what’s going on?
Do Android users expect more from free apps? Is it a subscription thing? Or is the Play Store just terrible for discovering smaller apps?
I’m not here to argue that one platform is better than the other. I’m actually trying to figure out what Android users value that I might be missing.
And if you’re thinking “maybe your app just isn’t that good”, fair enough. I’d genuinely like to hear why.
