Mishaal Rahman: Apps targeting the next Android release (i.e. Android 18) will no longer be able to directly write to contacts with the WRITE_CONTACTS permission. Here's why that matters🧵

Is the Gemini assistant widely considered a massive downgrade from Google Assistant?

What spurred this question was, it now requires me to unlock my phone just to add something to a stupid Google Keep grocery list. But this isn't a support request -- I just wonder if there is anyone out there going, Wow, what a great upgrade! Or is the general sense that it is LESS capable?

what is a basic system feature google quietly locked behind restrictions that completely ruined your workflow

it feels like every single new android release comes with google removing old permissions or forcing apps to jump through extra steps just to do basic tasks. seeing that android 18 is completely blocking apps from using direct contact write permissions is just the latest example.

what is a classic open android feature or system permission that google locked down or completely ruined over the years under the excuse of privacy?

Geekerwan Flagship Soc Shootout

Bilibili link, Chinese only. Tldr: apple mogs, Xiaomi and mediatek great showings, Qualcomm shat the bed. I think the samsung using exynos rumors seem much more likely to be true now.

Introducing GetYahRootBack: A free, open-source hub for Android & Samsung device firmware & root info

Hey everyone,

My partners and I recently launched a new community resource: https://getyahrootback.admindashboard.dev/?hl=en-AU

Our overall goal is to create a centralized, community-driven database for Android and Samsung device information, firmware mapping, and root journeys. We built this because we miss the early days of Android, where everything was intended to be universally available and community-focused. Our intention is to keep this website, along with all active and future projects we host, 100% free, entirely open-source, and strictly ad-free forever.

We need your help to grow the database:

If you have data to share, please navigate to the "Send device journey tab" on our website to contribute any Samsung or general Android device info. We have a template provided there to make it easy. If you choose to contribute, we will gladly credit and thank you on the site for helping the community!

GitHub Status:

At the bottom of it all, our data and projects tie back to our GitHub page, where all the info will be uploaded for the community to audit and use. We are currently just waiting for GitHub support to reactivate the page, but you can bookmark it here:

Let us know what you think or if you have any feature requests for the site!

How many people use Airpods with Android?

I find Airpods to be some of the best headphones even on Android, but hay that they aren't actively supported by Apple; firmware updates, custom settings, etc. You literally have to connect to an iPhone to set things up then switch back to your Android.

On the reverse side Google allows full features on iPhone for Android headphones
My Pixel Buds 4 pro still get beat by Airpods Pro 3, and Don't XM5 by the Airpods Max.

My Google Pixel 4a 5G was losing fps, nothing helped. Then I denied anything I could to gather my data – and no more fps losses

I was tired with that little green light turning on every now and then that indicates that the camera or the microphone work. Got pissed, went to the settings, prohibited everything to spy on me (as much as a user can do via settings). Now google navigator doesn't show my speed, but that's the price I'm willing to pay.

And later on I realized that I don't see sudden fps drops when I scroll the browser anymore.

Definitely gives something to think about. Hope that helps.
