Android 17 desktop also runs the Linux desktop

Hi,

We make a Debian based desktop distribution that runs as an application on top of any Android device. The only requirement is that the Android device needs to be rooted and use Google's standardized GKI kernel. The latest Android 17 release has excellent support for desktop mode and will be the basis for Googlebook laptops. Here is video of Linux desktop running on an Android 17 phone:

Our latest Linux desktop is now based on Debian Trixie (13.5). You can download a free evaluation version from www.volkspc.org.

How come back in the days (Android 2.3 - Cyanogen mod) I had much more possibilities than today?

I remember that my hotspot would show me all the connected devices and I could manage them. Today, I can't even see how many devices are connected to my Android hotspot.

What's the most underrated Android phone right now?

Everyone talks about Samsung, Google Pixel, and iPhone.

Which Android phone do you think deserves more attention than it gets?

It can be a flagship, mid-range device, or even an older model.

Rules

1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/OnePlus etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Opinion: The lack of "Dual Recording" (switching between cameras while recording) is a major blindspot/oversight in the industry.

After using Samsung for years and switching back to Motorola recently, I was shocked to see that you could not switch cameras (from front to back) while recording. I did a bit of research and it seems to me that Samsung is the only major phone manufacturer that has this feature. Not Motorola, not Google (Pixel), not Sony, not even Apple.

Let's talk about the Tensor G2 modem: Is mobile data drain still the biggest bottleneck for mid-range Androids?

I’ve been testing the Pixel 7a lately, and the battery disparity between Wi-Fi and Mobile Data is staggering. Even when strictly locked to 4G LTE with screen brightness under 50%, the device aggressively overheats and struggles to push past 6 hours of Screen On Time (SOT).

This seems to be a recurring theme with Samsung-fabbed modems in the Android ecosystem compared to Qualcomm equivalents.

For those using Tensor-powered Pixels or Exynos devices, how much of a battery hit are you taking when off Wi-Fi? Do you think Google's shift away from Samsung foundries in the upcoming generations will finally solve this, or is this just the reality of compact Android phones right now?
