US Clothing Giant Expanding In Russia — Media

According to Kommersant, American fashion brand Guess has reacquired its stake from a Russian partner in what experts have described as an unusual deal for the fashion market in the sanctioned country.

The clothing manufacturer and retailer reportedly bought back its 30% share from local partner Vyacheslav Shikulov for €8 million ($8.5 million) and has consolidated 100% of its Russian business after the US Treasury Department approved the deal.

At the end of 2015, the parties signed a ‘put option’ agreement that gave Shikulov the right to sell his 30% stake in a local business and obliged the American company to buy out his share by December 31, 2025.

❗️Biden And McCarthy Reach Deal To Increase US Debt Limit

US President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have reached a “tentative” agreement on raising the country's debt ceiling and curbing federal government spending following a lengthy phone call on Saturday evening. The bill, however, must be finalized and voted through Congress before the government runs out of cash to pay its bills.

“I believe this is an agreement in principle worthy of the American people. It has historic reductions in spending, consequential reforms that will lift people out of poverty into the workforce, rein in government overreach,” McCarthy told journalists.

“The agreement represents a compromise, which means not everyone gets what they want,” Biden said. “It is an important step forward that reduces spending while protecting critical programs for working people and growing the economy for everyone.”

👔 Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said it was pointless to ban or criticise the resumption of air links with Russia.

"Every day thousands of vehicles cross the border, the Upper Lars checkpoint. Including passenger, freight, thousands of cars, and what is the difference, I don't understand, let's close it [the land border] too," said Garibashvili.

The premier also noted that every year Georgia receives "hundreds of millions of dollars" in money transfers from Russia. According to him, members of Georgian diaspora send money to family members in Georgia, relatives and develop their businesses. "It is our duty to help our people everywhere, inside or outside the country.

Russia Outlines Conditions For Ukraine Peace Deal

The Ukraine conflict could be settled if Kiev were to re-commit to its neutral status, recognize “new territorial realities,” and declare Russian as a state language, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said in an interview released on Saturday.

Speaking to the TASS news agency, the diplomat said Moscow “is convinced that a peace settlement will be possible only if the Ukrainian armed forces cease hostilities, and Western weapons shipments are stopped.”

He also stressed that to achieve a durable peace, Ukraine “must return to a neutral non-aligned status” and “refuse to join NATO and the EU,” adding that Kiev should recognize the “new territorial realities” that emerged after people exercised their right to self-determination.

3.5 Million Ukrainians Entered Russia Since February 2022 — Official

More than 3.5 million Ukrainian citizens have crossed into Russia since Moscow launched its military operation more than a year ago, Vladimir Kulishov, the head of Border Guard Service, said on Saturday.

Speaking to the TASS news agency, Kulishov noted that “due to the aggravated humanitarian situation in the area of hostilities,” Russian authorities have taken several steps to facilitate entry for millions of Ukrainians. The official did not clarify whether the figure represents the number of Ukrainians remaining in Russia or whether some later left the country.

Kulishov said the conflict has resulted in an “escalation of military threats” to the nation’s border, stemming from Kiev’s attempts to “stage provocative acts” and send sabotage and reconnaissance forces into Russia.

Voting For Erdogan ‘A Sin’ — Presidential Election Rival

Turkish presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu has declared it “a sin” to vote for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, adding that “sincere Muslims” would not commit such an act. Erdogan, a social conservative, is expected to defeat Kilicdaroglu in a runoff election on Sunday.

“Do not sin by voting for Erdogan,” Kilicdaroglu urged the faithful during an appearance on a Fox News Turkish subsidiary on Saturday. “A sincere Muslim would not commit such a great sin,” he added.

Kilicdaroglu’s invocation of religion is out of character for the secularist politician. His CHP party supported a ban on the wearing of headscarves in public institutions until last year, and Kilicdaroglu himself follows a minority sect of Shia Islam – Alevism – rather than the mainstream Sunni Islam that around 90% of Türkiye’s population follows.

Taliban Clashes With Iranian Forces — Reports

Taliban forces opened fire on Iranian border guards on Saturday, killing at least two people, Iranian state media reported. While the situation is reportedly under control, unverified video footage shows Taliban fighters moving weapons to the border.

The incident occurred at the border of Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan provinces and the Afghan areas of Nimroz. Taliban militants opened fire first, killing at least two Iranian guards, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported, citing police sources.

The Iranians responded in kind, inflicting “heavy casualties and serious damage,” IRNA stated.

EU Sanctions Talks Stumble Over Kiev’s ‘War Sponsors’ List — Politico

Negotiations over the EU’s 11th package of sanctions on Russia have stalled due to opposition from Athens and Budapest, which want their companies removed from a list of ‘war sponsors’ compiled by Kiev, according to Politico.

Two rounds of talks in Brussels this week ended with no deal in sight, the publication reported on Saturday, citing multiple anonymous diplomatic sources.

The main roadblock is Kiev’s notorious list of “sanctions-evaders” and “international sponsors of war,” which features many European companies simply because they refused to cut all business ties with Russia.

Russian Timber Exports Continue To Fall

Foreign sales of Russian timber saw a further decline in the first quarter of this year, dropping more than 20% to 4.5 million cubic meters, according to the latest data by the Russian forest regulator, Roslesinforg, as quoted by Russian business daily Kommersant.

The drop is primarily attributed to the EU’s sanctions against Russia over its military operation in neighboring Ukraine. The bloc had previously been among the major importers of Russian timber.

According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia, in 2021, timber exports (including byproducts, such as birch logs, plywood logs, and fuel chips) to European countries amounted to roughly $504 million.

West’s Involvement In Ukraine Conflict ‘Growing’ — Kremlin

Western countries have broken every boundary in their stand-off with Moscow over Ukraine, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov has said in an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin.

Peskov was asked to comment on the recent decision by several Western countries to train Ukrainian pilots to fly American F-16 fighter jets and whether Peskov believed there was a line that the West would be reluctant to cross.

“It is difficult to say where this red line lies. In theory, reason should dictate this red line to the countries of the collective West,” he said. “Unfortunately, this is not happening.”

US And Allies ‘Playing With Fire’ — Russian FM

The US and its allies are “playing with fire” by doubling down on their support for Kiev amid the conflict with Moscow, including by planning to provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

“Of course, it’s an unacceptable escalation,” Lavrov said regarding potential deliveries of American-made warplanes to Kiev in an interview with Russia 1 TV on Sunday. “I think there are reasonable people in the West who understand this. But everything is being dictated by Washington, London, and their satellites inside the EU.”

According to the minister, Poland, and the Baltic States – Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia – are “executing on the ground the aim set by the US to weaken Russia, deliver it a strategic defeat.”
